Holmstrom was waived by the Islanders on Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Holmstrom hasn't drawn into an NHL game since the 2011-12 season, and was never expected to contend for a spot on the Islanders' Opening Night roster, so this development is hardly surprising. As long as he isn't nabbed off waivers by another NHL club, the 29-year-old forward will head to AHL Bridgeport this weekend, where he'll likely spend the entirety of the 2016-17 season.

Islanders' Ben Holmstrom: Inks one-year deal with Islanders
Holmstrom signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders on Thursday.
Holstrom's deal is purely a depth signing for the Isles. The 29-year-old forward hasn't drawn into an NHL game since the 2011-12 campaign, and he'll likely spend the entirety of the 2016-17 season in the AHL. Holmstrom tallied 24 points (four goals, 20 assists) over 76 games with AHL Bridgeport last season.
