Blackhawks' Ryan Stanton: Gets tryout with Chicago
Stanton signed a professional tryout contract with the Blackhawks on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks in 2012-13, and he's a veteran of 120 games. Stanton spent last season with AHL Rockford, so he has some familiarity with the organization, but he's unlikely to get more than a two-way contract even if he impresses in training camp.

Ryan Stanton: Released from PTO
Stanton was released from his professional tryout with the Oilers on Saturday.
Stanton is under contract with the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, so he'll report there before the minor-league season starts in February. The 31-year-old Stanton hasn't played in the NHL since 2015-16, so there's little chance he rises to that level again in 2020-21.

Stanton was promoted after Adam Larsson (upper body) was placed on injured reserve. The 28-year-old Stanton has notched one helper, 14 PIM and a plus-1 rating in 11 minor-league games this season. The WHL product has never been a prolific scorer, so fantasy owners shouldn't be banking on him to start arbitrarily potting a bunch of goals.

The Oilers defense is in freefall, having allowed an astounding 18 goals in the last three games, so this move is likely in an attempt to shake things up and give Stanton a chance to prove himself where the rest of the defensive corps cannot. The 28-year-old put up decent defensive numbers while playing regularly for the Canucks from 2013 to 2015, but has never been much of a scoring threat.

Oilers' Ryan Stanton: Waived by Edmonton
Stanton (foot) was waived by the Oilers on Tuesday with the purpose of assignment to AHL Bakersfield.
This was the likeliest course of action for Stanton anyway and he will now have the opportunity to rehab his injury in the minors with the goal of taking another shot at the NHL roster once he is healthy enough. That could be easier said than done though, as it will probably require an injury to one of Edmonton's defensive guys.

Stanton was likely competing with Eric Gryba and Matt Benning for a spot on the third pairing, but he'll now have to face the prospect of sitting out for an extended time frame. The 28-year-old has logged a lone NHL appearance in the past two seasons, and this injury will likely result in him being reassigned to AHL Bakersfield once he's cleared for action.

Stanton will likely be fighting for a spot on the Oilers' 23-man roster along with Eric Gryba. Last season, the 27-year-old Stanton failed to get onto the ice with Colorado, instead suiting up with AHL San Antonio and AHL Cleveland for the year. Considering the blueliner last tallied an NHL point back in 2014-15 with Vancouver, fantasy owners probably shouldn't be pinning their hopes on him suddenly becoming an offensive force in the league.

Stanton was traded to Columbus from Colorado on Monday in exchange for Cody Goloubef.
Neither defenseman has set foot on NHL ice this season, so needless to say this transaction doesn't exactly send shockwaves across the fantasy community. Stanton will immediately join Columbus' AHL affiliate looking to build on his four points in 15 games at AHL San Antonio this season.

Marcus Johansson may receive a suspension for the hit he delivered to Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey's head in Thursday's matchup with New York, so the Capitals reassigned Stanton on Friday to open up a roster spot in case they need to recall a forward. Stanton did not crack the Capitals' lineup during his one-week stay with the big club.
