Panthers' Paul Thompson: Named captain of AHL Springfield
Thompson was named captain of the Springfield Thunderbirds as he begins his second tour with the team.
Thompson, a Massachusetts native, served as an alternate captain for the team during their inaugural season in 2016-17. After spending last season away from the team, he signed back in the Panthers system this past offseason. The 29-year-old right wing had 24 goals last year with AHL Chicago.

Panthers' Paul Thompson: Signs with Panthers
Thompson signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Panthers on Monday, the Panthers' official site reports.
It will be Thompson's second stint with the Panthers after the 29-year-old played for the team during the 2016-17 season, recording three assists over 21 games. Last season, Thompson appeared in 76 games for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, registering 38 points (24-14-38).

Golden Knights' Paul Thompson: Sent down to AHL
Thompson was returned to AHL Chicago on Monday, David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Thompson's time with the Golden Knights was of the "blink and you'll miss it" variety. He was called up prior to Sunday's game against the Flyers but did not play. Now, the 29-year-old is back in the AHL, where he could end up staying the rest of the season.

Thompson was brought up from AHL Chicago on Sunday, David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.
Thompson hasn't seen the ice in the NHL this season and played just 24 games at the top level over the two previous seasons. Even with several injuries on the Vegas roster, it's unlikely that Thompson sees much playing time.

Golden Knights' Paul Thompson: Waived by club
Thompson was waived by the Golden Knights on Monday for the purpose of reassignment, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Thompson has appeared in 24 NHL games over the past two seasons in which he registered three assists and 24 PIM. The winger showed off his offensive acumen with AHL Springfield during the 2016-17 campaign, as he potted 42 points in 51 contests. The University of New Hampshire product should get a crack at earning the occasional call-up during the upcoming season if he can continue to impress -- this time with AHL Chicago.

Golden Knights' Paul Thompson: Signed to one-year deal
Thompson signed a one-year contract with the Golden Knights on Saturday.
Thompson appeared in 21 games with the Panthers in 2016-17; he notched just three assists with a minus-4 rating in that span. However, there should still be some continuity with his development since the Golden Knights have a pair of former Florida executives running the show in Vegas -- Gerard Gallant as the head coach and Mike Kelley as an assistant bench boss.

Thompson was reassigned to the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL on Tuesday, Steve Goldstein of Fox Sports Florida reports.
Thompson has notched three points (all assists) in 21 contests for the Panthers this season. He will remain a recall option, but won't likely make any sort of fantasy impact even if he does make his way back to the NHL.

Thompson has a pair of assists over his last five games.
The pair of apples gives the rookie rearguard three points in 13 contests this season. Thompson has also thrown 27 hits and blocked 11 shots despite receiving very little ice time (8:04 on average) and occasionally serving as a healthy scratch, so perhaps the AHL journeyman is finally finding a way to carve out a career at the NHL level at the age of 28.

It's unclear at this point what prompted the move to bring Thompson up to the big club. He's notched 15 points to go with a plus-3 rating in 20 AHL games this season, but he'll likely start off on Florida's fourth line if he does indeed land in the lineup at all.

Panthers' Paul Thompson: Placed on waivers Monday
Thompson was waived by the team Monday in order to reassign him to the AHL, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.
Thompson logged just three contests for New Jersey last season in which he tallied two PIM, three shots on goal and averaged 12:32 of ice time. The winger has been significantly more productive in the minors where he has racked up 90 points over the previous two campaigns. Unless the Panthers are bit hard by the injury bug, the 27-year-old is likely to spend the bulk of the 2016-17 campaign in the minors.

Panthers' Paul Thompson: Traded to Panthers
Thompson and fellow prospect Graham Black were acquired by Florida on Friday in a swap for Marc Savard's $4.1 million contract and a 2018 second-round pick.
While Thompson's NHL appearances have been infrequent -- a mere three contests this year -- he has been a productive member of AHL Albany. During the 2015-16 campaign, the 27-year-old racked up 35 points in 56 games. Looking ahead, fantasy owners can expect the winger to spend the bulk of next season in the minors with the Portland Pirates, severely limiting his value.

For the 2015-16 campaign, Thompson has racked up seven goals and nine assists in 22 games with the Baby Devils. At 27 years old, the undrafted forward has yet to draw into an NHL game. As a result, his call-up means much more to New Jersey than fantasy owners scouring the waiver wire for help.
