Justin Williams: Announces retirement
Williams will call it a career and hang up his skates, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Williams just completed his 19th NHL season, having logged 1264 games over the course of his career. Selected by the Flyers with the 28th overall pick in the 2000 NHL Draft, the 39-year-old winger spent time with four organizations, the longest of which was eight seasons with the Hurricanes over two separate stops. All told, the three-time Stanley Cup winner registered 320 goals and 477 assists, plus another 102 postseason points.

Hurricanes' Justin Williams: Nets first postseason goal
Williams scored a goal on a team-leading five shots Monday in a 4-3 loss to Boston in Game 4.
After going his first five playoff games without a goal, Williams opened the scoring midway through the first period, threading a shot through traffic from the top of the circle. Williams has had his scoring troubles after joining Carolina in January, although he did finish the regular season with a flourish, picking up five goals in the last four games before the shutdown.

Williams found the net with the man advantage just 1:38 into the third period, giving Carolina a 3-2 lead. It took the 38-year-old some time to find his game after joining the Hurricanes in January, but he's on absolute fire right now with six goals during a five-game scoring streak. As Williams approaches the 700-point milestone for his career (he's at 798), he can help win fantasy owners a playoff matchup with his current tear.

Williams extended his pointless streak to four games Saturday against the Golden Knights, finishing the game with a minus-3 rating and 14:54 of ice time.
Williams was strong out of the gate in his return from a three-month absence, scoring three points in his first three games back in the lineup. However, he's been skating mostly on the Canes' third line with Erik Haula and Brock McGinn, which will limit his chances to contribute offensively, although he is seeing regular minutes on the power play. Keep him on your bench until he starts to show a little more consistency.

Williams' return to the Hurricanes is off to a terrific start. After scoring the shootout winner in his season debut Sunday, Williams followed up that performance with a two-goal effort Tuesday. His power-play goal in the first period snapped Carolina's eight-game drought with the man advantage, and he later added an insurance tally midway through the third. The venerable Hurricane was making his first appearance of the season after signing with Carolina on Jan. 8 and it was fitting that he scored the decisive goal. Williams logged just over 13 minutes of ice time and skated on the right side of the fourth line with center Lucas Wallmark and Brock McGinn. There are a lot of things to keep an eye on here -- including possible rust, age and his initial bottom-six role -- but Williams did score 23 goals and 53 points a year ago so be prepared to pounce if the early returns are promising.

Williams will make a base salary of $700,000 with up to $1.3 million in performance bonuses, Brian Compton of NHL.com reports. The 38-year-old racked up 23 goals and 53 points over 82 games last season, and he took off the first half of this season for rest purposes. He could make his season debut as early as Friday versus the Coyotes.

Justin Williams: Won't start season with Hurricanes
Williams announced Monday that he will "step away from the game" and won't sign with Carolina ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.
While it may sound like a retirement, and very well could be, both the team and player were clear that this should be considered a break. This leaves the door open for Williams to sign with the club prior to the trade deadline (Feb. 24) in order to be eligible for the postseason. If this does indeed mark the end of the road for Williams, he will retire having played in 1,244 games for Philadelphia, Carolina, Los Angeles and Washington. Over the course of his 18-year career, the veteran has racked up 312 goals and 474 assists while lifting Lord Stanley's Cup three times.

Justin Williams: Remains undecided
Williams is "still debating" whether to retire according to Carolina general manager Don Waddell, per Sara Civian of The Athletic.
The Hurricanes appear to be in no hurry for Williams to make his decision, though they likely want him in the fold for the start of training camp. The 37-year-old put up his second straight 50-plus point campaign last year and appeared in all 82 regular-season contests, which is a good indication he still has something left in the tank. If he does re-up with Carolina, the winger figures to be back in a top-six role while continuing to provide top-end fantasy value.

The veteran is set to turn 38 at the beginning of next season, and told reporters that he's been in frequent contact with the Hurricanes about his future. Williams added reliability to a young club last season, racking up 23 goals and 53 points while playing all 82 games. He was also instrumental in the team's Eastern Conference Finals appearance, collecting seven points in 15 playoff games. The winger is set to hit the open market come July 1, and could add a strong veteran presence to any team in the league, should he decide to keep playing.
