Alexey Marchenko: Finalizes three-year deal
Marchenko inked a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
Marchenko went unclaimed off waivers, which fantasy owners should have seen coming, considering he had already announced his intention of heading to Russia. The fact that the blueliner was willing to commit to three seasons away from the NHL does come as a surprise, however. Given he managed just eight points in 41 outings last year -- split between Toronto and Detroit -- it may not be worth it to stash Marchenko away until he (potentially) returns to North America.

Alexey Marchenko: Released unconditionally
Marchenko will head to the KHL next season after being placed on unconditional waivers Monday, James Mirtle of The Athletic reports.
Marchenko was likely going to be watching from the press box more often than not this season. Combined with a $1.45 million cap hit, the Leafs obviously felt it wasn't worth it to retain the blueliner -- who they picked up off waivers last season. With the announcement he intends to play in the KHL, it is unlikely any NHL club will want to snatch him off the waiver wire.

Maple Leafs' Alexey Marchenko: Placed on waivers
Marchenko was designated for waivers by Toronto on Monday, according to agent Dan Milstein.
This could just be a procedural move to allow the Leafs the ability to move Marchenko up and down between the NHL and AHL. However, it could also be linked to his $1.45 million cap hit as Toronto is already expected to rely on long-term injured reserve to stay below the cap. A statement is expected to be released Tuesday, which should clarify the situation and what it means for the blueliner's future with Auston Matthews & Co.

Maple Leafs' Alexey Marchenko: Playing time limited in Toronto
Marchenko continues to see sporadic game time with the Leafs.
His time with the Buds has been a couple games dressed, then a couple games scratched. All told, Marchenko has played 11 games with the Leafs and tallied a goal and an assist. His sporadic playing time makes it difficult to even consider him as a fantasy option.

Marchenko scored his first goal of the season in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Red Wings.
It was sweet justice for the unassuming defender, as he spent his first 110 career games with the Wings. Marchenko is a steady shot blocker, but not much of an offensive force.

Marchenko finally made his Leafs debut Thursday night after missing 10 games to injury.
He skated with Jake Gardiner. Marchenko is a big and mobile skater who has been under the radar much of his young career. He makes smart decisions with the puck and is a good passer, but doesn't project as a big scorer in the NHL.

Maple Leafs' Alexey Marchenko: Nabbed off waivers by Toronto
Marchenko was claimed off the waiver wire by the Maple Leafs on Saturday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Red Wings GM Ken Holland chose to waive Marchenko knowing that a more established defenseman in Brendan Smith (knee) would be coming off IR this weekend. As for the Russian, Marchenko has one year left on his standard two-way contract valued at $2.9 million before he'll become a restricted free agent. A true competitor with international experience, he seems to be a nice fit for a Toronto team that is quickly rebuilding under the foundation of young forward talents like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.

Red Wings' Alexey Marchenko: Lands on waiver wire
Marchenko was placed on waivers Friday with Detroit intending to activate Brendan Smith (knee) from injured reserve, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
It's a bit surprising that Marchenko was the one to get the ax, as he's a tireless and low-maintenance shot-blocking defenseman who the Red Wings utilized in the last two postseasons. Of course, there's a chance that he'll clear waivers and subsequently get sent to AHL Grand Rapids to remain within the Red Wings organization.

Red Wings' Alexey Marchenko: Warming pine lately
Marchenko was left with the dreaded 'DNP' next to his name for three straight games leading up to All-Star Weekend.
There is no word of an injury to the Russian blueliner, but coach Jeff Blashill seems to prefer rolling out the cerebral Nick Jensen on the third pair with veteran Niklas Kronwall, who has been shuffling in and out of the lineup due to a recent groin injury and needs to avoid wear and tear on his bum knee. Detroit entered the 2016-17 campaign chock-full of talented forwards, but from a fantasy hockey perspective, it's been wasteland on the blue line outside of Mike Green and his 24 points in 41 contests. However, we still like Marchenko's long-term potential; he's a relentless two-way competitor who tends to do the dirty work such as getting in the way of pucks in front of the netminder -- he blocked 100 shots last season and has 44 this campaign.

Marchenko's return from a nine-game injury layoff comes at a great time, as the Wings saw a pair of defensemen -- Niklas Kronwall (lower body) and Brendan Smith (leg) -- depart with injuries in Wednesday's game against the Ducks. A true gamer skilled at blocking shots, Marchenko should find himself on the third pair with Xavier Ouellet. The 25-year-old has the potential to gain fantasy relevance in future seasons.

This news effectively rules Marchenko out for Wednesday's meeting with the Ducks, but should be encouraging for fantasy owners. If he is ready to play versus Los Angeles, the defenseman will have missed eight consecutive outings while dealing with this ailment. Xavier Ouellet is the leading candidate to find himself watching from the press box once Marchenko is given the all clear.

Marchenko will miss at least three more games after having already been sidelined for the Wings' previous four outings. The defenseman is still looking for his first goal of the year, as he has garnered just five helpers on the season. Given his limited production and injuries concerns, fantasy owners may want to consider other options on the blue line. Once the 24-year-old is cleared to return, he will need to be activated off injured reserve and Detroit will need to clear room on the 23-man roster.

Red Wings' Alexey Marchenko: Moved to injured reserve
Marchenko (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Monday.
The move could be made with a retroactive tag dating back to Dec. 13, but the team didn't announce that being the case. It wouldn't be surprising if Marchenko sits out the team's three contests before the short Christmas recess, but it's a relatively safe assumption that he will skip both Monday and Tuesday's contests at a minimum. The team should update the blueliner's status again when he's fit to return.

Marchenko (shoulder) is shaping up to be an injured scratch for Saturday's game against the Ducks, per NHL.com.
The young defender missed eight games with the nebulous "upper-body" injury tag before returning on Dec. 9. He appeared in parts of three contests before getting hurt yet again. It's unfortunate that the Russian is missing out on crucial development time in the NHL, but Marchenko's a gamer with a no-quit attitude, so expect him to do everything it takes to get back on the ice as soon as possible.

Marchenko's shoulder injury is not considered serious, so he remains day-to-day ahead of Saturday's contest against the Ducks. Coach Jeff Blashill told reporters that he won't name a replacement for the young blueliner until pregame warm-ups, though we can see rookie Ryan Sproul tagging in on the third pair with Brian Lashoff.

Conservative owners out there may want to wait for official team confirmation that Marchenko's ready to roll after the young defender missed the past eight games with the injury, though the Russian may not be heavily owned to begin with since he's relatively inexperienced. Assuming he does draw into the upcoming match, this will be career contest No. 100 for the seventh-round pick of the 2011 draft.
