  • Martin Reway: Inks deal with Russian club

Reway agreed to terms on a one-year contract with HC Slovan Bratislava of the KHL on Wednesday.

Reway was with the Canadiens for training camp at the start of the year, but his reassignment to AHL Laval didn't sit well. After just five minor-league games, the winger was able to reach a deal with the Habs to terminate his contract, allowing him to head back to Europe, where he had spent the previous two seasons. At this point, it seems unlikely the 22-year-old will be back in North America any time soon.

Reway, who missed all of last season with a heart condition, is set to participate in Montreal's rookie camp, which begins Thursday, the Montreal Gazette reports.

This is an encouraging development for a player who hasn't let go of his NHL aspirations in spite of heart inflamation, as diagnosed last fall. Montreal took the Czech prospect in the fourth round (No. 116 overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In 2015-16, the left winger combined for 36 points (13 goals, 23 assists) between Sparta in his home country and Fribour-Gotteron HC of the Swiss-A circuit.

Reway signed his first NHL contract this offseason and while he may have been on the outside looking in to secure a spot in the majors, his absence from camp all but guarantees he will start the 2016-17 campaign in the AHL. Selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Draft out of the QMJHL, the winger has spent the past two season playing in Europe, where he has compiled 73 points in 67 contests. Fantasy owners, especially those in dynasty leagues, may want to keep an eye out for a call up late in the year when Montreal starts picking up those inevitable bumps and bruises of an 82-game season.
