Olkinuora posted a 6-8-0 record with a 3.75 GAA and an .868 save percentage in 15 games with AHL Grand Rapids this season. The 32-year-old netminder had three superb years in the KHL prior to signing a one-year deal with the Red Wings last June.

An impressive three-year run in the KHL landed Olkinuora a two-way deal with Detroit this offseason but he didn't have a good chance to make the Opening Night roster ahead of Ville Husso or Alex Nedeljkovic. Olkinuora never played above the AHL level during his previous stint in North America. The 31-year-old has revitalized his career over the last three years in the KHL, appearing in 97 games with a combined 50-30-10 record between Admiral Vladivostok and Metallurg Magnitogorsk. The Finnish netminder will join the Red Wings' organization this year, and he could compete for the backup role to Alex Nedeljkovic in training camp.
