Nikolay Goldobin: Released by KHL club
Goldobin was released by CSKA Moscow on Monday.
In 21 games this season, Goldobin registered four goals and seven helpers for CSKA. After spending the past season primarily in the AHL, Goldobin inked a two-year deal with the KHL club but it seems has worn out his welcome. It's not immediately clear if the 25-year-old winger will rejoin the Canucks organization, yet the timing would suggest he is preparing to attend training camp.

Nikolay Goldobin: Returns to Russia
Goldobin agreed Saturday to a two-year contract with KHL club CSKA Moscow, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
Goldobin appeared in a Nov. 27 game for the Canucks but has otherwise spent the 2019-20 campaign with Vancouver's AHL affiliate in Utica, putting up 50 points in 51 contests. With the AHL season under an indefinite suspension that isn't expected to be lifted until at least May, Goldobin will be allowed to pursue an opportunity in his home country of Russia. Goldobin, who appeared in 125 regular-season games at the NHL level between San Jose and Vancouver the past five years, said he plans to explore a move back to North America once his contract with CSKA Moscow comes to an end, per Rick Dhaliwal of TSN 1040 Vancouver.

Goldobin's demotion suggests Tyler Motte (lower body) or Michael Ferland (concussion) may be ready to return soon. The 23-year-old has eight power-play helpers in 2018-19, and Goldobin logged an impressive 3:22 of PP ice time in Wednesday's win. Through 58 games, the young winger is averaging 15:01 of TOI per night, nearly three minutes above his career high from last season (12:20).

Goldobin's on pace for 11 goals and 36 assists this season. He's benefited from averaging a career-high 15:18 of ice time and setting up shop on the No. 1 power play. When it comes to the Canucks, Elias Pettersson is hogging most of the attention -- understandably so, as he's up to 12 goals in his first 17 NHL games -- but Goldy getting overshadowed by his own teammate is actually a good thing if you're using him as a value play in DFS, where the most successful players think outside the box in order to cash in.

Goldobin had been struggling to produce, and while it was just a secondary assist, it's still nice to see him finally crack the scoresheet. He's getting plenty of ice time, including an abundance on the top power play unit, so he needs to start contributing more on a regular basis, before those minutes are handed out elsewhere.

Goldobin started the year on a strong note, netting three points in the opening two games against the Flames. He showed good chemistry with rookie standout Elias Pettersson, but can't seem to get much going on his own with Pettersson on the shelf. Goldobin is known for showing flashes of brilliance, but has yet to do so with consistency. This year he's getting a bigger opportunity than he ever has before, and needs to prove that he can be a reliable source for secondary scoring.

Entering Wednesday's game, the 22-year-old Russian had only 61 NHL games to his name, tallying 19 points along the way. However, if Goldobin keeps up this production, it'll be hard to take him out of the lineup.

The crafty winger, whom the Canucks selected 27th overall in the 2014 draft, seeks a full-time role with the parent club this season. Goldobin stacked eight goals and 14 points against a minus-14 rating over 38 games in 2017-18. If you squint hard enough, you can look past his team's defensive shortcomings and come to realize that Goldobin shouldn't be overlooked near the tail end of fantasy drafts.
