An undrafted defenseman who gained prominence with the University of Connecticut, Newpower returns for his fourth season with the AHL's Griffins. Detroit bolstered its defense in the offseason, which makes it unlikely that Newpower ascends to the big stage this campaign unless the Wings get hit severely by injuries on the blue line.

Newpower had two goals and five assists in 59 AHL games with Grand Rapids last season. The 25-year-old has never played in the NHL.
