Kings' Peter Budaj: Hangs it up
Budaj will call it a career following the end of AHL Ontario's 2018-19 campaign.
Budaj saw action in 368 NHL games over the course of his 13-year career, in which he posted a 158-132-40 record with 18 shutouts and a .904 save percentage. The veteran netminder saw his spot as the No. 2 in Los Angeles taken over by Jack Campbell and instead spent the bulk of his final year playing with AHL Ontario. Drafted by the Avalanche with the 63rd overall pick in the 2001 NHL Draft, the Slovak spent six years in Colorado before playing for Montreal, Los Angeles and Tampa Bay.

Kings' Peter Budaj: Sent packing Tuesday
Budaj was demoted to AHL Ontario on Tuesday, per the AHL transactions page.
Rather than sending rookie Cal Peterson back to the minors, it appears the Kings have opted to keep the youth around and will instead send the veteran back to the minors. This could indicate that Jonathan Quick -- who was activated off injured reserve Tuesday -- will cede some starts in goal after a mediocre showing to open the season. Budaj should remain the top backup option if either of the two lands on injured reserve.

Kings' Peter Budaj: Allows goal in relief
Budaj stopped two of three shots in relief during Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Avalanche.
Cal Petersen got lit up for six goals before getting the hook in favor of Budaj. In three appearances this season, Budaj has allowed six goals on just 33 shots.

This bodes well for Budaj's chances to start Saturday against the Predators, as Cal Petersen will get Friday's start. Budaj struggled in his only start of the year, allowing four goals on 19 shots to a strong Toronto team Tuesday.

Even if Budaj is healthy enough to suit up, it seems unlikely he will be between the pipes, which means Cal Petersen is slated to make his first NHL start -- although the team has not provided confirmation of its starting keeper. The veteran Budaj will likely get the start for the second game of the Kings' back-to-back versus Nashville on Saturday.

Budaj will start Tuesday's game versus the Maple Leafs, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports.
The 36-year-old veteran netminder takes over starting duties considering both Jack Cambell and Jonathan Quick are out with knee injuries. Budaj has one NHL appearance this season, back on Oct. 13. Jack Campbell will be the KIngs' likely starter Sunday against the Rangers while Quick is out indefinitely, per NHL.com. The injury is unrelated to the lower-body injury that forced Quick to miss five games earlier in October. Budaj has made one appearance for the Kings this season.

The move to ship Budaj to the minors -- assuming he clears waivers -- settles the question of who will be the No. 2 behind Jonathan Quick, as Jack Campbell appears to have won this camp position battle. Given Budaj's experience, it's certainly possible a team snags him off waivers or tries to trade for him later in the season.

Budaj allowed two third-period goals against Vancouver, stopping seven of nine shots overall and leading to a 4-3 overtime loss Thursday.
This isn't the way to win a job. After Jack Campbell stopped 22 of 23 and handed Budaj a 3-1 lead, the veteran Slovak couldn't hold it, allowing the Canucks to overcome the deficit. A .778 percentage just won't cut it, and it's a really bad night to have it when his competition, Campbell, had a .957 mark. This will not be an easy battle to win the job to back up Jonathan Quick.

Budaj made nine saves without giving up a goal in relief of Jack Campbell in Tuesday's 4-2 split-squad road loss to the Coyotes.
Budaj and Campbell figure to battle for the No. 2 job behind Jonathan Quick this season. The latter managed to save only 18 of 22 shots in this intrasquad contest, and there's something to be said about how Budaj maintained a 27-20-3 record, 2.12 GAA and .917 save percentage as a fill-in for an injured Quick during the 2016-17 campaign. This is still Campbell's job to lose, but Budaj certainly can create a case and Tuesday's happenings dump a few extra marks on his side of the ledger.

Kings' Peter Budaj: Traded to Kings
Budaj was dealt to Los Angeles on Wednesday in exchange for center Andy Andreoff.
Budaj wasn't going to get a real chance in Tampa at age 36, so this gives him a chance to get back on the ice as a backup in Los Angeles, where he was a strong option in 2016-17. However, with Jack Campbell sitting behind Jonathan Quick, Budaj will have to earn the No. 2 job to get the chance to post solid numbers again. Budaj is likely no better than a spot starter at this point in his career, and goalies of his caliber will almost always be available to fantasy owners on the waiver wire.
