Matiss Kivlenieks: Passes away at age 24
Kivlenieks passed away at the age of 24 on Sunday.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman released the following statement regarding Kivlenieks' death: "The National Hockey League was saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic passing of goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks. On behalf of the NHL family, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates in both the Blue Jackets organization and his native country of Latvia. His love for life and passion for the game will be deeply missed by all those who have been fortunate to have him as a teammate and a friend."

Blue Jackets' Matiss Kivlenieks: Assigned to minor-league affiliate
Kivlenieks was assigned to AHL Cleveland on Saturday.
Kivlenieks earned a 5-4 overtime win over the Red Wings on Saturday, making 33 saves on 37 shots. It was his first win in his second appearance of the year at the NHL level. The Latvian goalie will finish the year with Cleveland.

Blue Jackets' Matiss Kivlenieks: Starting Saturday
Kivlenieks will get the starting nod for Saturday's home game against Detroit, Alison Lukan of The Athletic reports.
The 24-year-old made his season debut against Friday against the Red Wings, stopping 31 of 34 shots in a loss. Kivlenieks rolled through his AHL competition with a 2.27 GAA and a .926 save percentage through seven appearances this season. He'll get a chance at revenge against one of the league's lowest-scoring offenses in Saturday's regular-season finale.

Kivlenieks stopped 31 of 34 shots in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Red Wings.
Detroit's final two goals were scored into an empty net. Making only his seventh career NHL appearance and first since 2019-20, the Jackets handed Kivlenieks a 2-0 lead midway through the second period, but the 24-year-old couldn't make it hold up as the Wings beat him three times in a 3:02 span later in the frame. Kivlenieks has yet to play for the Blue Jackets this season, but he's been good in the minors, going 6-1-0 while posting an admirable 2.27 GAA and .926 save percentage. He'll attempt to pick up his first NHL victory of the year in a favorable home matchup with a Detroit team that's 6-16-4 on the road this season.
