Michalek was placed on waivers by Toronto on Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
The 31-year-old was placed on waivers to make room for Ben Smith, who the Leafs picked up in a corresponding move. If Michalek clears waivers, he'll report to AHL Toronto.

Michalek will skate on the Leafs' top line beside Nazem Kadri to start the season.
There was thought he might provide a veteran presence to Auston Matthews' line, but he gets the top gig with Nazzy instead. Michalek still has some gas in the tank and is eager to prove his injury-riddled 2015-16 isn't an omen for a decline in his career. Michalek may provide sneaky fantasy value in deep leagues, as he'll also get some power-play time.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Bangs home two goals against Team USA
Michalek potted a pair of goals in Thursday's 4-3 win over Team USA.
The veteran also received the second most ice time (21:26) among Czech forwards in this one, trailing only Martin Hanzal of the Coyotes (22:54). Michalek's three points in three games at the World Cup is a nice omen for those considering utilizing his fantasy services in what will be his first full season with the Maple Leafs. He's expected to fill a top-six role -- potentially beside stud rookie Auston Matthews -- so the 31-year-old (and former 35-goal scorer) appears to have an outside shot at cracking the 20-goal plateau for the sixth time in his career.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Gearing up for World Cup of Hockey
Michalek (knee) is healthy and ready to play with the Czech team in the World Cup of Hockey this fall, Sportsnet reports.
Michalek is the elder statesman on a team littered with skaters vying for consistent NHL roles. Included in the Dion Phaneuf trade with Ottawa last February, the winger will look to get off to a strong start to the 2016-17 campaign after he was limited to 45 games last season; since he's on track to participate in the World Cup, it appears that fantasy owners will have a chance to evaluate his performance before deciding whether to draft him. Even though Michalek is past his prime, he's adept on the power play and projected for second-line duty with James van Riemsdyk and Nazem Kadri, a pair of heavy point producers. Consider buying low on Michalek.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Out for season with knee injury
Michalek will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Michalek sustained the injury in Thursday's game against Buffalo, but he still managed to log 17:15 of ice time in the loss. The savvy veteran has had trouble with injuries, as he was traded to the Buds in early February with the club knowing he was dealing with a fractured finger. With the Leafs having been eliminated from playoff contention for a while now, he has plenty of time to get over this latest ailment for 2016-17. Replacing Michalek on the roster is Frederik Gauthier, who reportedly was called up from the minors Saturday.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Suffers injury Thursday
Michalek suffered an undisclosed injury in Thursday's 4-1 loss in Buffalo, Dhiren Mahiban of The Canadian Press reports.
It's unclear when the injury occurred during the game, but it appears as though Michalek will miss out on Saturday's contest with Detroit. The report notes that Michalek will be evaluated Friday and that a recall is expected for Saturday's game. Michalek has missed two separate stretches of the season with finger injuries to this point, so this current ailment may be related.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Starting to come alive in Toronto
Michalek handed out two power-play assists Thursday in a 6-5 overtime win against the Ducks.
He's been thriving in a weird way over the course of Boston's current homestand, racking up five points despite putting only three shots on goal in the last five games. That pair of primary helpers represent Michalek's first assists with the man advantage all season. A two-time 60-point man earlier in his career, the Czech veteran is currently thin on fantasy value outside deep formats despite a spike in ice time over the last two games.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Makes first appearance with Leafs
Michalek overcame a finger injury and made his Leafs debut Monday against the Sabres, picking up four hits and two PIM in 12:43 of ice time, including 1:32 on the man advantage.
Last month, Michalek was involved in a nine-player swap that resulted in defenseman Dion Phaneuf ending up with the Senators. A fractured finger had kept Michalek out until Monday, but he was quite active in the limited time that he was on the ice. Still, there's not much fantasy appeal with Michalek, as he's been moved from the eighth-ranked offense in Ottawa to a Toronto team that averages just 2.31 goals per game, 29th in the league.

Maple Leafs' Milan Michalek: Will return Monday
Michalek indicated Sunday that he's "ready to go," for Monday's contest against the Sabres, the Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star reports.
Michalek hasn't played since breaking his finger Jan. 27, and will be in new colors when he takes the ice. The veteran has seen a dip in scoring this season (10 points in 32 games), and moving to a bad Maple Leafs squad probably won't help his case. However, he will remain a top-six forward, so the winger could still be an option in daily contests and deep season-long leagues.

Michalek (finger) anticipates making his team debut Monday against Buffalo, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.

Finally nearing a return, the Maple Leafs should update the winger's status again when he's fit to play. While he did take a step in the right direction by practicing Friday, Michalek likely needs to get himself into game shape considering he's been out since early December. When healthy, the 31-year-old Czech should slot into a top-six role with his new club.

Michalek (finger) could move onto the Leafs' third line upon his return from injury, reports the Toronto Star. He said he "should be back in a few weeks."
He was one of Ottawa's best two-way forwards and would add a scoring touch to a checking line in Toronto. Michalek had 35 goals in 2011-12, but has seen his pace slow considerably since then and he has just six snipes in 32 games this season.
