Lee Stempniak: Announces retirment
Stempniak announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday, Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com reports.
Stempniak defied the odds as a fifth-round pick, enjoying a highly successful career that spanned 14 seasons and 10 different teams. The 36-year-old winger will hang up his skates having racked up 203 goals and 469 points in 911 NHL appearances.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Sent back down
Stempniak was returned to AHL Providence on Monday, Conor Ryan of the Daily Free Press reports.
Stempniak didn't give the team much in his first two NHL appearances of the 2018-19 campaign, posting no shots or points and a minus-1 rating while skating 7:46 and 7:52 in a Saturday-Sunday back-to-back. The 36-year-old veteran is no longer cut out for the top level at this stage of his career.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Called up as emergency option
Stempniak was recalled from AHL Providence on an emergency basis Saturday.
This name should ring a bell since Stempniak has 13 years of NHL experience under his belt between 10 clubs. With Jake DeBrusk tending to a foot injury ahead of Saturday's game against the Senators, there's a chance the 36-year-old journeymen will be called upon for his first NHL game since April 7, 2018. He has 469 points (203 goals, 266 assists) through 909 career contests.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Signs with Bruins
The Bruins signed Stempniak to a two-way contract for the remainder of the season, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Stempniak was sent to waivers for the purpose of assigning him to AHL Providence. This move will allow the Bruins to recall Stempniak at any point, including the playoffs. However, he likely won't rise to the lineup unless there's an injury.

Though Stempniak, who was with the Bruins in training camp on a professional tryout agreement, is not on the team's roster, his preference is to play for Boston down the road if the opportunity to do so arises, Joe Haggerty of NBC Sports Boston reports.
In the meantime, Stempniak is free to mull other opportunities, but for now he's an option for the Bruins if the team wants to add some veteran depth up front. The 35-year-old logged just three goals and nine points in 37 games for Carolina last season, but when healthy, Stempniak can provide experience and occasional bursts of secondary scoring while working as a bottom-six forward.

Stempniak scored a goal and two assists in Monday's 4-3 preseason win over the Flyers.
The 35-year-old journeyman is trying to get his career back on track with the Bruins after missing most of 2017-18 due to various injuries, so Monday's performance is definitely a step in the right direction. Stempniak will have to settle for a checking-line role if he does break camp on Boston's roster, however, and his days as a consistent 15-goal, 40-point scorer are likely behind him.

Stempniak put up three goals and nine assists in 37 games during 2017-18, averaging just 12:28 of ice time.
After injuries sidelined the veteran until Jan. 12, Stempniak had just a limited role in his second season with Carolina seeing his ice time drop from 15:51 to 12:28 in 2017-18, along with his points-per-game dip from .49 to .24 this season. The veteran still came out firing putting up 41 shots on goal, and since 60 percent of his shifts began in the offensive zone it's surprising he wasn't able to make more of an impact, but perhaps the upper-body injury lingered throughout the season. Stempniak is set to be a free agent, and could very well join another club as Carolina continues to rebuild for a playoff push.

Stempniak has certainly made his presence felt after missing the first half of the season to an upper-body injury. Stempy registered 40 points in 82 games last season, so his return to the lineup is very positive news for the Canes, who currently sit just four points out of a playoff spot in the East. He makes for a good waiver-wire pickup candidate in deeper formats.

Stempniak -- who was out on a conditioning assignment for a back ailment -- suffered an upper-body injury that is expected to sideline him long term, Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal reports.
This latest malady is a huge blow for Stempniak, who still has yet to make his 2017-18 debut. With the veteran once again unavailable, the Canes were forced to call up Phil Di Giuseppe in order to provide additional forward depth. While it has yet to officially happen, given the pessimism expressed by head coach Bill Peters, Stempniak is likely bound for another stint on injured reserve.
