Matt Greene: Joining Kings as scout
Greene will join the Los Angeles organization as a member of the scouting department -- ending his 12-year professional career, LA Kings Insider Jon Rosen reports.
After three years with Edmonton, Greene spent nine seasons with the Kings -- racking up a total of 615 NHL games in which he registered 17 goals and 63 assists. During the 2016-17 campaign, the 34-year-old saw action in just 26 outings -- in part due to injuries -- so it should come as little surprise he is ready to enter the next phase of his career in hockey.

Matt Greene: Waived by Kings
Greene (back) was placed on waivers by the Kings in order to buy him out of the final year of his contract, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
The decision to buy out Greene was not unexpected, as Los Angeles was looking to save some cap room. The 34-year-old has played in just 29 games over the last two seasons due to injuries, so it wouldn't come as too much of a surprise if he opted to hang up his skates. If this is it for the Michigan native, he'll end his career with 615 games played, in which he recorded 17 goals and 63 helpers. Even if the two-time Stanley Cup champion does land with another club, it's unlikely that he'll offer much in terms of fantasy value. In order to be placed on waivers, Greene by rule must have been cleared from his back injury.

Kings' Matt Greene: Will be bought out
Greene is expected to be bought out of the last year of his contract, worth $2.5 million, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
This buyout would reduce the cap hit of Greene's contract from $2.5 million to $833,000 next season. The 34-year-old, who has been rehabbing from back surgery, was activated Tuesday for the specific purpose of this buyout. Greene hasn't collected more than 10 points in a season since 2011, so freeing up that cap space was an easy decision for the Kings.

Kings' Matt Greene: Rehabbing from back surgery
Greene underwent back surgery at some point during the second half of the season, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Greene has dealt with an amalgam of injuries over the years and has been limited 29 regular-season games over the past two campaigns as a result. The 33-year-old has never been much of an offensive threat, as his career-high 15 points in 2011-12 will attest, and his inability to stay healthy may doom him to an early retirement, especially considering that he has just one year remaining on his contract with the Kings.

Kings' Matt Greene: Placed on injured reserve
Greene (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve (retroactive to Jan. 20) by the Kings on Monday, Elliott Teaford of the Southern California News Group reports.
Greene has been dealing with some old injuries of late, and the issues will hold him out for a little while. It's unclear how long he will be shut down for, but the veteran blueliner's placement on injured reserve shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Expect further news to surface as he draws closer to rejoining the lineup, but his status shouldn't be of much concern in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.

Kings' Matt Greene: Old injuries crop up for veteran
Greene, who was unable to skate at Sunday's practice, may be shut down due to a variety of ailments, LA Kings Insider reports. "He's been struggling with a back, groin, all that stuff - issues that he's had off and on for the last number of years - and it acted up on him, and we shut him down again," head coach Darryl Sutter said.
It doesn't sound good for Greene, who had appeared in just four of LA's last 14 games. There's little reason to expect much from Greene at this point given his dwindling role and uncertain health status.

Kings' Matt Greene: Ends 26-game scoring drought with goal
Greene skated only 9:42 in Thursday's overtime win against Pittsburgh, but he scored his first goal of the season. He added seven hits and blocked a shot.
In fact, the goal was the blueliner's first since the 2014-15 campaign, as he missed almost all of last season to injury. He's been in the lineup for less than half the Kings' games this year, playing low minutes and offering predictably little production, so there's not much to see here from a fantasy perspective.

Greene is set to open the season as one of the Kings' depth defensemen, LA Kings Insider reports.
Greene had a rather tumultuous offseason after having been placed on unconditional waivers by the Kings in June but managed to secure a spot in the Kings' bottom pair rotation after missing all but three games last year due to a shoulder injury. Greene won't add much fantasy value but could be a steadying force for the Kings in their bottom pair of blueliners.

Greene (shoulder) was placed on unconditional waivers by the Kings on Thursday for the purpose of buying out the final two years of his contract, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Greene missed all but three games recovering from shoulder surgery with no clear sign of whether he will be back to full health for 2016-17. Consequently, it comes as little surprise that Los Angeles wanted to get rid of his $2.5 million cap hit for the next two years. Kings' Matt Greene: Out for playoff opener
Greene (shoulder) will not play Thursday in Game 1 against the Sharks, CSN Bay Area reports.
No surprise here, as Greene has been out since Oct. 16. He underwent shoulder surgery on Dec. 3 and apparently remains in recovery mode. The veteran shutdown defenseman will cost the Kings $5 million over the next two seasons, so the team has to hope he can make a full recovery sooner rather than later.

Kings' Matt Greene: Back skating but not close to a return
Greene (shoulder) has resumed skating recently but isn't close to returning to game action, LA Kings Insider reports. "They're doing me a favor right now of being out there. I think that's basically the equivalent of riding the stationary bike," Greene said. "I'm just trying to get into shape, and I'm a long ways off of playing."
The initial prognosis following Greene's injury had him sidelined for the rest of the season and that doesn't appear to have changed one bit unless he's able to make an unexpectedly speedy recovery and the Kings make a deep run in the playoffs.

Greene (shoulder) has been ruled out of the remainder of the season, Helene Elliott of the LA Times reports.
Greene underwent shoulder surgery on Dec. 3, and apparently will require the remainder of the 2015-16 campaign to fully recover from the procedure. Perhaps in a corresponding move, the Kings added defender Luke Schenn to their roster via trade on Thursday, bolstering the team's depth at defense. Greene will likely be ready for the start of next season's training camp.

Greene underwent shoulder surgery Dec. 3, and it's been reported that he will be out indefinitely. The LTIR tag makes Greene ineligible to play for at least 24 calendar days and 10 regular-season games. As a corresponding move and cap-saving measure, the Kings have reassigned Justin Schultz and Nick Ebert to AHL Ontario.
