There's been growing fear that Rio de Janeiro wouldn't have enough police to keep people safe during the upcoming Olympics, but most didn't think the police would be the ones committing the crimes.

According The Sydney Morning Herald, New Zealand athlete Jason Lee was forced into a car by armed police and made to withdraw $800 over the weekend in Rio.

Lee, 27, is a national jiu-jitsu champion, but is not part of New Zealand's delegation since jiu-jitsu is not an Olympic sport.

Having lived in Rio for about a year, Lee said he has experienced plenty of scares, but never like this.

"I don't think I've ever felt like I could possibly die," he said.

Lee described the incident in a Facebook post, saying that he was threatened with arrest if he did not get into a private car and accompany the officers to two ATMs to withdraw money.

Lee later reported the incident to the tourist police.

"I was (going back and forth) about whether I should even make a complaint," Lee said. "One of the guys I was reporting it to said 'We understand you are hesitant, because we are the police, and that branch of the police is so scary even we are afraid of them'."

The opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics is set for Aug. 5.
