FIFA has issued a warning to Mexico over the conduct its fans' in the Confederations Cup. The chant occurred in Mexico's opening game against Portugal in Russia, and it was directed towards the opposing team's goalkeeper. This is in line with what Mexican fans have been doing for quite a while, most notably during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but FIFA has said that they're going to start cracking down on offensive incidents. It's a concerted effort by FIFA to fix its image problem, something that the fans are apparently not going to help with.

FIFA issued a statement on the warning, claiming that Anin Yeboah of the disciplinary committee "decided to impose a warning on the Mexican Football Federation for the misconduct of a small group of Mexican fans in relation to insulting and discriminatory chants." The league's disciplinary committee leader has already helped to institute a policy that will allow referees to end matches in the face of hateful or offensive actions by fans.

Here's what Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio had to say about FIFA's decision:

"There are certainly worse chants in other cultures that generate violence. It is a question of interpretation and has to be sorted out between the [Mexico Football Federation] and FIFA," Osorio said.

"Some understand it as an outrage, an insult. Without being Mexican and being proud of managing this team, I think I understand the intent [of the chant] and it has nothing to do with [discrimination]."

Mexico has suffered for their fans' chants before, being fined five times in one year. Mexico has implored fans to stop with an "Embraced by Soccer" campaign in 2016, but to no avail. They will play their next match on Wednesday against New Zealand, and it will be interesting to see if the fans heed FIFA's warning.

UPDATE: The Mexican national team released the following statement pleading fans to stop goal kick chants:

"As you know, FIFA takes the goalkeeper chants very seriously, and the possible sanctions are serious. Continuing this behavior will hurt the product on the field and could lead to a loss. If a game is suspended or if you are expelled from the stadium, we lose, you lose, we all lose.

Because we know that you are unconditional love for your team, we trust in you, and we know that together we will change the course of history."
