Another week, another set of strong statements from soccer legend Diego Maradona.

Often a critic of superstar Lionel Messi, Maradona praised Messi's rival Cristiano Ronaldo after his stunning year that saw him win back-to-back Champions League titles, La Liga and Euro 2016. He went as far as saying he wished Ronaldo was born in another country - his country.

"I wish Ronaldo were Argentine," Maradona said to TyC Sports

That would be something, wouldn't it? Imagine those two on the sane national team. It would almost be unfair, at least on paper. But we know that isn't happening.

Maradona went on to talk about the comparison between Messi and Ronaldo. It certainly feels like most would pick Messi as the best player, but Ronaldo's last 12 months likely would sway voters.

"Messi isn't much better than Ronaldo. Let's be clear, he isn't much better. But if I had to pick, I'd pick Leo," Maradona said.

Maradona also said he can't remember the last time Messi played poorly, while also noting he doesn't need to win the World Cup to validate his greatness. Stay tuned for next week, when he will inevitably change his mind and say Messi is overrated. Maradona sure knows how to keep everyone on their toes.
