  • Cubs' Drew Smyly: Struggles with control, takes loss

Smyly (2-3) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks across 1.1 innings of relief Friday against the Reds. He struck out three.

While Smyly was effective at missing bats he was equally ineffective finding the plate. The three walks are a new season high and his BB/9 for the year is now up to 5.1, which would be a new career worst. Smyly will need to exhibit better control if he wants to chip away at his 5.06 ERA, and he's off the fantasy radar at the moment given his role and recent performance.

  • Cubs' Ian Happ: Goes deep again Friday

Happ went 1-for-3 with a walk, a two-run home run and three total RBI in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Reds.

Happ did his best to keep the Cubs in the game, launching his sixth home run of the season in the second inning, then walking home a run with the bases loaded in the fifth. The outfielder has gone deep four times over his last six games, and he has a robust 1.184 OPS during the stretch. Happ's overall numbers don't look as good, but he's worth riding with while he's hot.

  • Cubs' Javier Assad: Strikes out seven Friday

Assad didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Reds, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven.

Both of the runs charged to Assad came in the fourth inning when the Reds strung together three straight singles. Still, it was a positive effort for Assad overall after he'd given up seven runs (six earned) over 9.2 innings in his previous two outings, though he now has seven or more strikeouts in three of his last four starts. Overall, the 26-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 61:26 K:BB through 63.1 innings this season. Assad's currently in line for a rematch with Cincinnati on the road in his next start.

  • Cubs' Michael Busch: Absent from Friday's lineup

Busch is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Reds.

It sounds like the Cubs plan to play Pete Crow-Armstrong in center field more often after they recalled him from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. That will mean more Cody Bellinger in right field and at first base, where he is playing Friday. Busch could have his playing time dip as a result. The rookie infielder had a stretch in mid-April when he homered in five straight games, but in 37 contests since then he's slashed just .202/.296/.316 with two homers and a 38.6 percent strikeout rate.

  • Cubs' Colten Brewer: Starting rehab assignment

Brewer (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Brewer has missed the last couple weeks with a lower-back injury. Because he hasn't been sidelined long, his rehab assignment figures to be brief. Brewer has posted a 3.09 ERA and 12:4 K:BB over 11.2 innings with the Cubs this season.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Two hits, homer vs. Brewers

Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Thursday's 6-4 loss to Milwaukee.

Bellinger opened the scoring with a two-out solo shot off Colin Rea, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his eighth homer of the year and his first in 18 games. While he hadn't been hitting for much power, Bellinger's been seeing the ball well recently -- he has hits in six straight games, going 11-for-27 (.407) in that span, including five consecutive two-hit efforts. The 28-year-old outfielder is now slashing .267/.332/.471 with 26 RBI and 19 runs scored through 190 plate appearances this season.

  • Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Quality start in no-decision

Taillon didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.

All three of Milwaukee's runs off Taillon came in the third inning, including a pair on three consecutive two-out hits. While the Cubs bullpen couldn't close out a win, it was the third quality start for Taillon this year -- he failed to make it through six innings in his previous three outings, posting a 5.02 ERA in that span. Overall, the 32-year-old right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 29:12 K:BB through his first eight starts (44.1 innings). Taillon's tentatively slated for a home matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.

  • Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Absent from Thursday's lineup

Suzuki is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Brewers, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

The Cubs will go with Mike Tauchman in right field, Cody Bellinger at designated hitter and Pete Crow-Armstrong in center field as they try to salvage a series split. Though his power hasn't shown up yet this season, Suzuki enters Thursday's game with a modest six-game hit streak, going 8-for-27 over that span.

  • Cubs' Cade Horton: Nursing lat issue at Triple-A

Horton was removed Wednesday from his start with Triple-A Iowa due to right lat soreness, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Horton allowed two runs and recorded just three outs Wednesday before being lifted. The right-hander has been sent to Chicago to be examined. Horton has offered a mixed bag of results since being promoted to Iowa earlier this month, striking out 22 over 18 innings but also walking 11 and giving up 15 runs. Between the uneven recent results and the injury, it's unlikely the top prospect will be seen in the big leagues anytime soon.

  • Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Sent down to minors

The Mets optioned Vazquez to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Vazquez's first stint in the majors lasted a little more than a week, but he received just one plate appearance and struck out. Pete Crow-Armstrong was called up from Iowa to take Vazquez's place on the active roster.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Recalled from Triple-A

The Cubs recalled Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Crow-Armstrong was sent down last week after seeing his playing time dip, but manager Craig Counsell has indicated the rookie could have a bigger role during this stint, playing some center field while Cody Bellinger sees more action in right field and at first base, per Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. The 22-year-old Crow-Armstrong has put up a .659 OPS with one home run and five steals in 23 games with the big club this season. He's starting in center field and batting eighth in Thursday's game versus the Brewers.

  • Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Posts steal

Suzuki went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Brewers.

Suzuki has gone 8-for-27 (.296) during his six-game hitting streak, though he hasn't posted an extra-base hit since May 15. The outfielder's steal Wednesday was his second of the campaign. He's slashing .254/.312/.389 with four home runs, 16 RBI, 19 runs scored and five doubles over 31 contests. Suzuki isn't having a poor year by any means, especially when factoring in his four-week absence with an oblique injury, but he's also not standing out in any particular area.

  • Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Takes first loss

Imanaga (5-1) took the loss Wednesday versus the Brewers, allowing seven runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over 4.1 innings.

Imanaga's last scheduled start was rained out, and instead of pushing him back, the Cubs opted to build in some extra rest for the southpaw. That plan appears to have backfired, as the seven runs he allowed Wednesday matched the total he'd given up in his first nine starts combined. His ERA rose from 0.84 to 1.86, and he's added a 1.00 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB across 58 innings through his first 10 big-league starts. Imanaga will look to shake off his first poor outing when he next takes the mound, which is tentatively projected to be a home start versus the White Sox.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Steals first base of 2024

Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Brewers. He also stole a base.

The stolen base was notable because it's the first of the season for Bellinger, though he did miss some time with a fractured ribcage, which could have cut into his running. He had a career-high 20 steals last year as he reached the 20-20 plateau for the first time in seven MLB campaigns. Bellinger hasn't been quite as effective so far in 2024, though he's batting a solid .262 with a .774 OPS, and the 28-year-old has the talent to start racking up the counting stats in a hurry.
