Canning (2-7) took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk over six innings while striking out three.
Canning got himself into trouble early after allowing two of the first three batters to reach base, which Christian Walker would capitalize on with a three-run shot to left field as Arizona took the lead over the Angels. The right-hander would allow only two hits from that point on, though one of those hits was a second long ball off the bat of Walker, putting Los Angeles in a 4-0 hole. Canning had not allowed more than three runs in either of his last seven outings coming in and it marked only the third time this season in which he's surrendered multiple home runs. He has, however, managed to go at least six innings in three consecutive starts.
Calhoun isn't in the Angels' lineup for Thursday's game against Arizona, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
After a 2-for-5 performance during the Angels' win Wednesday, Calhoun will take a seat for the series finale Thursday. His absence will move Taylor Ward into the DH spot while Kevin Pillar starts in left field.

The first baseman is up to a .216/.282/.338 slash line with seven home runs, 22 RBI, 20 runs scored, five doubles and no stolen bases over 59 contests. His batting average hasn't been higher than .250 all year, but his iffy contact and lack of speed have yet to cost him the opportunity to regularly bat leadoff. However, Michael Stefanic got a look atop the order in the previous two games before sitting out Wednesday. While Schanuel's spot in the lineup isn't in question, he could drop the down order soon if he goes back to struggling at the plate.

This was the longest outing of Soriano's career, and it was a good one. He had plenty of run support early and pitched into the ninth inning, ending the start with 97 pitches (63 strikes). He's quickly becoming one of the Angels' most reliable starters, having covered at least six innings in five straight appearances. He's at a 3.48 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB through 72.1 innings over 14 appearances (12 starts) this year. The 25-year-old's strikeout numbers have taken a hit from where they were last year when he was a reliever, but there's still value in a pitcher that can eat innings. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Brewers.
Angels' Chase Silseth: Struggles in third rehab start

Silseth struck out 10 over seven shutout innings between his first two rehab outings in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, but he struggled with both his control and command Tuesday while shifting his rehab to a higher-level affiliate. The Angels had hoped that he would build up to about five innings in Tuesday's rehab outing, but he fell well short of that benchmark, even though he pushed up his pitch count to 71 (35 strikes) after tossing 56 pitches in his prior outing in the ACL. Though Silseth could be a candidate to return from the 60-day injured list to rejoin the big-league rotation as soon as Sunday in San Francisco, the Angels may prefer to have him make one more start in the minors to iron out his control.

Suarez made his first start of the season Tuesday and didn't make a particularly compelling case to earn additional turns through the rotation. He allowed a pair of runs in the second after giving up two triples and a single, and Randal Grichuk would tack on a two-run blast in the third to spell an early end to Suarez's night. The 26-year-old's 7.08 ERA on the season is the second-highest in all of baseball among pitchers who have pitched at least 30 innings, trailing only Kyle Hendricks (9.07). If Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list the next time Suarez's turn comes up Sunday in San Francisco, the latter will presumably head back to the bullpen.
