  • Mets' Harrison Bader: Not in Friday's lineup

Bader is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.

Bader will begin the contest on the bench as the Mets go up against knuckleballer Matt Waldron. Tyrone Taylor is handling center field.

  • Mets' Edwin Diaz: Nabs win in return

Diaz (2-1) struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Thursday to pick up the win over the Marlins.

The right-hander looked good in his first appearance since May 25, topping out at 99.6 mph with his fastball. Diaz had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement before being activated Thursday, but he hadn't been his usual dominant self even before getting shut down -- so far in 2024 he has a 16.7 percent whiff rate, one of the lowest marks of his career and a massive drop from the 25.2 percent rate he delivered last year. While his results were impressive Thursday, Diaz managed only two swinging strikes on 15 pitches, suggesting that he may not be fully back in form yet.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Belts first career walk-off homer

Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double Thursday in a 3-2 win against the Marlins.

Martinez accounted for both of New York's extra-base hits in the victory, with his first knock being a seventh-inning double that contributed to the team's first run. The veteran slugger's second hit was more dramatic -- he took Miami closer Tanner Scott deep for a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Martinez's 321st career long ball and the first walk-off home run of his 14-year career. He's gone deep six times through 168 plate appearances this season.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Tosses six effective frames

Severino allowed one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings in a no-decision versus Miami on Thursday.

Severino recorded only one 1-2-3 inning and punched out a season-low two batters, but he held the Marlins scoreless until Jake Burger belted a solo homer in the sixth frame. It was the third time in his past four outings that the veteran hurler has yielded exactly one run, and he has a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP despite a mediocre 16:7 K:BB over 26.1 innings during that span. Severino is on pace for a career-worst 6.9 K/9, but he's been solid otherwise in his first season as a Met, posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 78 frames.

  • Mets' Christian Scott: Likely stuck at Triple-A, for now

Scott allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six over 3.2 innings for Triple-A Syracuse against Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said earlier this week -- prior to Scott's outing Wednesday -- that the plan was for the right-hander to remain at Syracuse for the time being, per Alex Smith of SNY. "We're still having conversations, but with all the off days we have coming up, we feel like a five-man rotation is what's best for us moving forward," Mendoza said. The 24-year-old Scott has struck out 49 batters in 34 innings with Syracuse this season, though he has also struggled to keep the ball in the yard, both at Triple-A and in his brief time in the majors so far. He should be up again later this season, but the organization seems to be pumping the brakes on an imminent return.

  • Mets' Marco Vargas: Shut down again at Single-A

Single-A St. Lucie placed Vargas on its 7-day injured list Tuesday with an unspecified injury.

Durability is becoming a growing concern for the 19-year-old shortstop, who is on the IL for a third time this season. Vargas is slashing .239/.384/.284 with six stolen bases over 86 plate appearances across 18 games with St. Lucie.

  • Mets' Joel Diaz: Healthy after Tommy John surgery

Diaz (elbow) has given up nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and five walks while striking out 15 over 12.2 innings across four outings (three starts) for Single-A St. Lucie since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last spring, Diaz hadn't been expected to make his 2024 debut until at some point around the middle of the season, but he made a speedier recovery than expected. After beginning a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League in early May and making three starts, Diaz was cleared to rejoin the Mets' Single-A affiliate.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Sitting out Thursday

Alvarez is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest versus the Marlins.

Alvarez started at catcher in the first two games of the series after being activated from the 10-day injured list, but he will sit out the finale. Luis Torrens will do the catching for Luis Severino.

  • Mets' Danny Young: Officially demoted

The Mets optioned Young to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Young was expected to be the Mets' roster casualty as a result of Edwin Diaz's (shoulder) return, and his move to Syracuse is now official. The left-hander has allowed just one run in nine innings with the Mets and also boasts a 1.59 ERA in the minors, so it's likely he rejoins New York's bullpen at some point later in the summer.

  • Mets' Edwin Diaz: Back from injured list

The Mets reinstated Diaz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Diaz has been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement. He fired two shutout innings with High-A Brooklyn during a rehab assignment, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that the Mets will make Diaz their closer once again after the team had used a committee approach leading up to the injury. The 30-year-old righty currently owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 30:7 K:BB through 20 innings on the year and has converted five of his nine save opportunities.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Hits seventh homer

Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk, two total runs and two total RBI in Monday's 10-4 victory against the Marlins.

Marte swatted a 434-foot solo shot in the fifth inning and added an RBI single in the eighth. The veteran outfielder finished with two hits for the third straight game. He's on a hot streak that has lasted more than two weeks -- Marte has seven multi-hit efforts in 10 contests since May 29 and is batting .471 (16-for-34) with nine RBI, eight runs and two stolen bases over that stretch.

  • Mets' Francisco Lindor: Goes deep Wednesday

Lindor went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs in a 10-4 victory versus Miami on Wednesday.

Lindor opened the bottom of the first inning with a double and subsequently scored on Harrison Bader's home run. The shortstop hit a long ball of his own in the eighth frame, going 414 feet to center field. Lindor has disappointed a bit this season after notching his first 30-30 campaign last year, though with 11 homers and nine steals he's one theft away from reaching double digits in both categories -- something only seven MLB players have done so far this season.

  • Mets' Harrison Bader: Clubs homer in victory

Bader went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 10-4 win over the Marlins.

Bader helped New York get off to a fast start, belting a two-run shot in the first inning. He added a single in the eighth inning for just his second multi-hit performance over his past 14 contests. Bader is batting just .216 during that span, though he does have a pair of homers and nine RBI. His slash line sits at .266/.317/.380 on the season.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Pitches well enough to win

Peterson (2-0) earned the win over Miami on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one batter over five innings.

Peterson wasn't exactly impressive in the outing -- he induced only two swinging strikes and walked more batters (two) than he struck out (one) -- but he survived just long enough to pick up his second straight victory. The four runs were a season-high mark for the southpaw, who has made only three starts thus far after beginning the season on the injured list due to a hip injury. Peterson's 4.32 ERA through 16.2 innings may be good enough to help him maintain a spot in the rotation, though his 6:5 K:BB doesn't bode well for his fantasy appeal.

  • Mets' Danny Young: Likely headed to Triple-A

The Mets are expected to option Young to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

With Edwin Diaz (shoulder) slated to come off the injured list Thursday, Young will be pushed back to Triple-A in order to free up a roster spot. He's found quite a bit of success in the majors this season, allowing just one run in nine innings while striking out 12 batters and walking four. If he's able to sustain his strong performance in Triple-A, the 30-year-old southpaw would likely be one of the first choices to return to New York if the Mets find themselves in need of a fresh bullpen arm.
