When Buzz Peterson was hired at UNC-Wilmington in 2010, there was some optimism surrounding the Seahawks. He was a big-name coach who was expected to bring back winning ways to UNCW.

After four straight losing seasons, though, the school is cutting ties.

“We appreciate Coach Peterson's work on behalf of the student-athletes and the university," athletic director Jimmy Bass said. “We thank him for his service and wish him well in the future."

Peterson was only 42-82 in four seasons with the Seahawks, never winning more than seven CAA games in a season. This season, UNCW finished at the bottom of the league, going 3-13 in the league and 9-23 overall.

Peterson had two years and more than $800K left on his deal with UNCW. Prior to joining the Seahawks, he had coached at Appalachian State, Tulsa, Tennessee and Coastal Carolina.

UNCW has had just one winning season since Brad Brownell left for Wright State in 2006.
