IU Coach Tom Crean

Too often in life, we all take for granted the simple tasks of opening our eyes, processing thoughts and putting a simple sentence together. In our program , we routinely emphasize to our players that everything matters and watching Devin improve just over the last 36 hours has furthered our belief in that approach.

On behalf of the Davis Family and the IU men's basketball program, we appreciate the concern, calls, texts, and thoughts and prayers we have received. We are especially grateful for every doctor, nurse, and staff member at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. We look forward to his continued recovery.

Indiana sophomore forward Devin Davis was in a Bloomington, Ind., hospital and listed in serious condition early Saturday after being struck by a car driven by a freshman teammate.

In a release, the school said Davis was injured following a car accident with a teammate, Emmitt Holt. Davis was on foot; Holt was driving. The Bloomington Police Department released a statement Saturday afternoon. Holt, a 18-year-old freshman, had a blood alcohol content level of 0.025.

Per Bloomington Police, the accident happened close to 1 a.m. on campus. Holt, per police, had drank alcohol but was not at a level of intoxication.

"Information gathered at the scene indicates that the driver of a white 2012 Jeep Liberty, Emmitt D. Holt, 18, had just dropped off a passenger, Devin L. Davis, Jr., 19, in the parking lot of Memorial Stadium on the IU campus," the police department's release states. "According to the driver and other witnesses in the vehicle, Holt then exited the parking lot to travel west on E. 17th Street. For reasons unknown, all witnesses indicated that Davis then entered the roadway and was struck by the front passenger side of Holt’s vehicle. Damage to the vehicle was located near the passenger side front fender and windshield. Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, Davis was located lying on the north side of E. 17th Street. He was unconscious and had a head injury."

News of the incident first came when the school put out a release Saturday morning.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with Devin and his family and we pray that his condition improves in the coming days," coach Tom Crean said in a statement. "An injury to one of us is an injury to all of us and we are devastated by the news. We will continue to support Devin and Emmitt in every possible way and I know the Hoosier family will come together to rally for these young men. We are working to gather additional information on the accident."

Davis, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds last season. According to 247Sports.com, the team's scheduled "Haunted Hall of Hoops" was still be held as planned for Saturday, but the scrimmage was no longer on the docket.
