Pittsburgh must have made quite an impression on Josh Newkirk.

The 6-foot-2 guard took an official visit to the Panthers' campus this past weekend and also conducted an in-home visit with coach Jamie Dixon on Tuesday night. When Newkirk canceled visits to Georgia Tech and Memphis, the writing was on the wall.

Newkirk made it official Wednesday, committing to Pittsburgh via Twitter.

"Officially committed to Pitt. Glad to be apart of the family #Hail2Pitt !!!" Newkirk wrote.

Newkirk is a strong and athletic prospect from Word of God (N.C.). He is explosive going to the rim, possessing the ability to beat his defender off the dribble and get to the basket. He has the ability to play both guard positions, but is beginning to make the full-time transition to point guard. Once he limits his turnovers and consistently knocks down jump-shots, he can be a really tough player to defend.

Pittsburgh now has two commitments for its 2013 class, as Newkirk joins top-100 forward Mike Young.
