Jeff Greene led Georgia Tech in receptions and receiving yards in 2012, but reportedly intends to transfer. (US Presswire)

Georgia Tech wide receiver Jeff Greene is no longer with the team, his high school coach told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Starr's Mill (Fayetteville, Ga.) High coach Chad Phillips told the AJC that Georgia Tech coaches were frustrated with Greene's effort and attitude, deciding "it would be best to part ways."

"It's a crying shame," Phillips said. "The [coaches] bent over backwards to help him. He was on his way to getting a college degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. It's a shame he had to be a little selfish."

Greene led the team with 18 catches for 284 yards (15.8 yards per catch) and two touchdowns. While the Georgia Tech offense under Paul Johnson has never relied heavily on the passing attack, there is almost always one dominant wide receiver  -- most recently, Stephen Hill -- who can take advantage of a defense committing too much to the flexbone option.

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, the talented sophomore did draw some comparisons to Hill, now with the New York Jets. And before the season, Johnson mentioned Greene specifically as a wide receiver who could have a breakout in 2012. Phillips indicated to the AJC that Greene will attempt to transfer to continue his playing career. With his combination of size and speed, Greene should be a welcome addition to whatever program he ultimately joins.

Georgia Tech faces USC in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31. After Greene, the Yellow Jackets' next three leading receivers are A-backs or B-back (running backs in Georgia Tech's offense). Jeremy Moore (nine catches, 167 yards) and Darren Waller (eight catches, 162 yards) will likely need to deliver some big plays in Greene's absence to help the Yellow Jackets keep up with the high-powered Trojans.
