One aspect of Maryland's recent improvements on the recruiting trail included the signing of several Washington, DC-area prospects. According to the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun, one of those signees will not be enrolling at Maryland this fall.
Citing sources with knowledge of the situation, the Post and the Sun reported that offensive lineman Derwin Gray, a four-star signee and Under Armour All-American from Friendship Academy, will not attend Maryland this fall due to "academic issues."
Gray was expected to challenge for immediately playing time at tackle, though the Terps do have sophomore Mike Madaras and senior Nick Klemm as the projected starters. If Gray is able to enroll in 2014, he is talented enough to challenge for a starting job.
This is not the first time that Gray has suffered a setback due to academics. Before transferring to Friendship Academy, he was suspended for all but one game of his junior year at Dunbar High School because of academics.
According to the Post, Gray will explore options for the 2013-14 academic year that include prep school and junior college. Maryland's hope is that the All-America offensive lineman can "stabilize his academics and return to the Terps" in 2014.
