California is getting much-needed line help from former Wake Forest defensive end James Looney, brother of 49ers offensive guard Joe Looney.

Looney is transferring to the Bears and will file an appeal with the NCAA to play right away, according to a source.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Looney recorded three tackles and 0.5 sacks in four games as a true freshman in the ACC last year.

Cal is looking to bolster its line play in 2014 after injuries ravaged both units in Sonny Dykes' debut season.
