Nagging foot injuries caused Wisconsin linebacker David Gilbert to miss much of the 2011 season and now he'll miss 2013 spring drills after he undergoes surgery on Friday to repair ligament damage in his right foot.

The injury will sideline him for a couple of months, but he is expected to be ready for the fall.

Gilbert played defensive end in 2012 and led all Badger linemen in tackles with 42. His 9.5 tackles for loss was second on the team. He recently moved to outside linebacker due to Wisconsin shifting from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. The 6-foot-4, 247-pounder should shine in the new scheme.

Three other senior defenders are also missing spring practice for the Badgers, including linebackers Ethan Armstrong and Brendan Kelly and nose tackle Beau Allen.
