Reds designate P Jason Marquis, promote P Pedro Villarreal

The Reds have promoted Pedro Villarreal and designated for assignment fellow veteran right-hander Jason Marquis.

The 36-year-old Marquis has failed to prove himself to be a still-viable starter. He has allowed 17 runs on 31 hits in his last 18 innings pitched. He has lost his last three decisions for Cincinnati, his sixth team since 2011.

Villareal has fared no better in brief stints with the Reds. He owns a 6.75 career ERA.
