White Sox acquire Samardzija, Ynoa in six-player deal with A's

The White Sox announced Tuesday they acquired starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and starting pitcher prospect Michael Ynoa in a trade with the Athletics. Chicago sent Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt, Josh Phegley and Rangel Ravelo to Oakland to complete the trade.

Samardzija is coming off his first All-Star season in 2014. He spent most of his seven-year career with the Cubs before being traded to Oakland in July. He is 36-48 with a 3.85 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 222 career outings (99 starts).

He is in the final year of arbitration, but White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Tuesday the team will try to sign Samardzija to a contract extension.

"We're going to make every effort in the coming weeks and months to try to make this a long-term relationship," Hahn said.

The 23-year-old Ynoa went 4-2 with a 5.52 ERA in 31 relief appearances for high Class A Stockton in 2014. The former starter is 8-10 with a 4.81 ERA in 70 career appearances (36 starts).
