Bernier signed a one-year (one-way), $750,000 contract with the Islanders on Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports. The Islanders were set to bring Bernier in on a tryout basis for training camp, but after they were able to rid themselves of Michael Grabner and his $3 million cap hit, the team opened up room to formally sign Bernier. The winger, who scored a career-best 16 goals with the Devils last season, isn't expected to see nearly as much run in Brooklyn this year, as the Isles' third and fourth lines already appear fairly solidified. Look for Bernier to serve as an extra forward and enter the lineup primarily when injuries surface.
