San Francisco at Arizona

Venue: Chase Field
  •

Paul Goldschmidt keeps coming up big for an Arizona Diamondbacks lineup that has been dangerous of late.

That hasn't been the case, however, when Arizona has faced Madison Bumgarner.

The left-hander will try to shut down the Diamondbacks for a third straight time and help the visiting San Francisco Giants bounce back from a heartbreaking defeat Saturday night.

San Francisco (31-29) appeared to be on its way toward handing Arizona's Patrick Corbin his first loss of the season, but Goldschmidt hit a three-run home run with two outs in the eighth inning to lift the Diamondbacks (35-26) to a 3-1 victory Friday.

"He is too hot of hitter and when you make dumb pitches and you throw to a dumb location they are going to make you look bad," losing pitcher Jeremy Affeldt said. "I take full responsibility. The loss is on me."

NL West-leading Arizona, winner of five of seven, maintained its 2 1/2-game lead over Colorado while moving 3 1/2 in front of the Giants, losers of seven of 10.

Though held down offensively Friday until Goldschmidt's home run, the Diamondbacks had scored 46 runs in their previous six contests.

Goldschmidt, batting .332, hit his 15th home run and increased his NL-leading RBI total to 57 on Friday. He's hit .345 with three homers and 16 RBIs in the past seven games.

"He's pretty special," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He really is.''

Goldschmidt hasn't delivered that kind of performance against Bumgarner (4-4, 3.46 ERA), going 1 for 6 with a single this season.

Bumgarner has allowed one run and eight hits over 14 1-3 innings in two outings against the Diamondbacks this season, on April 24 and 30. However, he's gone 0-3 with a 6.29 ERA in his last four starts, allowing nine runs in 12 2-3 innings over the past two.

Trevor Cahill (3-6, 3.27) also opposed Bumgarner on April 30 in San Francisco's 2-1 victory, giving up one run and four hits over eight-plus innings. He wasn't charged with the loss.

Cahill has also struggled recently, going 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in his last three outings after posting a 1.64 ERA in his previous five starts. He gave up five runs over five innings of a 7-1 loss to St. Louis on Monday.

The right-hander has gone 4-2 with a 2.52 ERA in eight career starts against San Francisco.

Brandon Belt has gone 1 for 11 against Cahill, while Brandon Crawford is 0 for 11 and Buster Posey 2 for 9.

Arizona's Gerardo Parra has batted .357 over his last 13 games, but is 0 for 10 with five strikeouts against Bumgarner.

Teammate Willie Bloomquist has gone 11 for 20 in six games since coming off the disabled list. He's 5 for 11 with a homer and double off Bumgarner.
