TORONTO -- Miguel Batista wanted the special night former teammate Randy Johnson had.
Batista took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays handed Johan Santana his first loss in 20 starts with a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.
Johnson pitched a perfect game for Arizona against Atlanta.
"I think it stinks that a 40-year-old man can do it, and I'm 33 and I didn't," Batista said.
Batista (2-3) didn't allow a hit until Luis Rivas' leadoff single in the sixth. He gave up two runs on two hits, walking five and striking out five in six innings.
Batista pitched behind Johnson in Arizona the last three years.
"I'm really happy to see that at his age he's still the best," Batista said. "When they come to play us, I can ask him what the secret was."
Reed Johnson and Carlos Delgado each had two RBI for the Blue Jays, and Terry Adams escaped a ninth-inning jam.
Santana (2-1) lost for the first time since July, 23, 2003, against Kansas City. He had won 10 straight decisions.
"You always have to be proud of the good things you do," Santana said. "Every time I went out there I just tried to give my team a chance to win."
The 25-year-old left-hander allowed five runs -- four earned -- in 5 1/3 innings.
"It's a pretty good run in between losses in the major leagues. I'm sure he feels disappointed," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Jason Frasor pitched two scoreless innings, and Adams worked the ninth for his third save. He allowed an RBI single to Michael Cuddyer before striking out Michael Ryan and Cristian Guzman with runners at second and third to end it.
Toronto manager Carlos Tosca thought Batista pitched great, but said he threw too many pitches (105).
"He had terrific stuff. He had no-hitter stuff as he showed through five innings," Tosca said.
After Rivas singled in the sixth, Ryan and Guzman walked to load the bases before Matthew LeCroy hit a two-run single to center, tying it at 2.
The Blue Jays took the lead with three runs in the bottom half. Santana gave up three straight singles to Josh Phelps, Chris Gomez and Kevin Cash before he hit Dave Berg with a pitch, scoring Toronto's go-ahead run.
Reed Johnson followed with his two-run double to left-center, giving Toronto a 5-2 lead.
Vernon Wells and Delgado hit consecutive doubles in the first.
Delgado hit a sacrifice fly in the third.
