Matt Clement allowed just an unearned run in seven innings to lead the Red Sox to a 7-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Clement improved to 4-0 and sent Jamie Moyer to his first loss.
"We put some runs on the board against a pitcher who had been one of the hottest in baseball," said Clement, who scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six. "It's fun to watch these guys hit."
Bill Mueller drove in four runs and David Ortiz homered for Boston, which scrambled before the game to field a lineup without Johnny Damon and Edgar Renteria. The pitching staff already was in shambles, with Wells and Schilling on the disabled list.
Still, the Red Sox won their fourth consecutive game to move a season-high five games above .500. Bronson Arroyo is also 4-0, Tim Wakefield is 3-1 and John Halama helped out with a win in his start as a fill-in.
"It starts with pitching and it usually ends with pitching," manager Terry Francona said.
Francona said Schilling, who has a sore right ankle, and Wells, who has a sprained right foot, were examined on Friday and are scheduled to be checked again before the team leaves on its trip Wednesday. But even without them, Boston has won six of seven since April 30, the day after Schilling joined Wells on the disabled list.
Moyer (4-1) couldn't stop a Seattle losing streak that has reached six in a row, failing for the second time to surpass Randy Johnson for the franchise record for wins. Moyer allowed six runs, seven hits and three walks before leaving with two outs in the third.
After starting the season 4-0 with a 2.53 ERA, Moyer has posted an ERA of 15.63 in his last two starts.
"Jamie had a tough night. That happens," second baseman Bret Boone said. "But we haven't done it for a while."
Ortiz led off again in the third, this time looping one over the right-field foul pole for his eighth homer. Kevin Millar walked and Varitek struck out before Payton singled, and Mueller followed with a two-run double to left.
Moyer retired Vazquez on a grounder to second base, but then walked Mark Bellhorn. Matt Thornton relieved Moyer and threw a wild pitch, then got Trot Nixon to fly out to right field and end the inning.
Thornton also walked Payton with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it 7-0. Seattle made it 7-1 in the fifth when Miguel Olivo hit a grounder to shortstop that Vazquez's threw into the Boston dugout.
Olivo moved to third on a groundout and scored on Ichiro Suzuki's sacrifice fly.
Damon had started in all but one of Boston's first 28 games, but he was given the day off to rest a strained left hamstring. Renteria was scratched during the afternoon after bruising his right index finger while bunting in Thursday's win at Detroit. He is day to day.
