D-Backs' Webb tosses seven shutout innings to sink Marlins

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb admitted he had no idea where his fastball was going Wednesday night. Neither did the Florida Marlins.

Webb threw seven shutout innings for his first win in nearly a month and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Marlins 7-0 for their fifth consecutive win.

"My fastball was everywhere," Webb said. "I made big pitches when I had to and got out of it somehow."

Chris Young homered and Scott Hairston was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who moved within 1½ games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Arizona manager Bob Melvin found himself looking at the scoreboard during the game.

"I did a little bit again tonight," Melvin said. "Call it a five-run rule. Get a five-run lead and I'll take a look up there."

Webb walked the bases full in the first -- the only three walks he issued -- but escaped when third baseman Mark Reynolds charged Miguel Olivo's grounder down the line and threw the catcher out at first.

"We had a chance to put a couple of runs on the board and maybe the game comes out differently," Marlins manager Freddi Gonzalez said. "He is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. He made some pitches."

Webb settled down to scatter six hits and strike out eight. He had lost his past three decisions and had not won since June 27 against Los Angeles.

"I got out of the first but battled every inning but the sixth," Webb said.

Juan Cruz pitched the eighth and Doug Slaten worked the ninth to complete the seven-hitter.

Arizona needed just three pitches to take a 1-0 lead against Scott Olsen (8-8) as Young hit his third leadoff homer of the season.

"I was just going up there trying to get anything started," Young said. "If I got a walk I'd be just as happy."

Olsen was one strike away from escaping the third inning but instead saw six consecutive Diamondbacks reach base as Arizona scored five runs.

Eric Byrnes hit a two-out single on a 1-2 count and Conor Jackson doubled past a sliding Jeremy Hermida in right field -- the first of Arizona's season-high six doubles -- scoring Byrnes to make it 2-0. Reynolds doubled to the wall in left, scoring Jackson, and Chris Snyder reached on an infield single off Olsen's glove.

Stephen Drew's line single to center made it 4-0 and Hairston followed with a two-run double to the base of the wall in left-center to give Arizona a 6-0 lead.

"Byrnes hit a great pitch," Olsen said. "I mean he's a .300 hitter so he's going to do that and it kind of snowballed from there."

Arizona added another run in the fourth when Byrnes doubled just inside the left-field line and Jackson hit an RBI single to center.

Olsen allowed seven runs and 11 hits, both season highs, over five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

  • Melvin said LHP Randy Johnson remains on schedule to throw a bullpen session Friday. "I was surprised with some of the things I read when he came in today and said he was ready to go on Friday," Melvin said before the game. "I didn't hear what he said to the media yesterday but I read some of the things and seemed like there were different versions of it."
  • Johnson has been on the DL since June 29 with a herniated disk in his lower back.
  • Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera doubled in the fifth to extend his career-best hitting streak to 15 games.
  • Diamondbacks 2B Orlando Hudson preserved the shutout in the fifth with a diving stop of a hard grounder by Mike Jacobs with runners on second and third and two outs.
