Alex Rodriguez hasn't given us much reason to pay attention to his play as of late. In the coming weeks, however, we might have a renewed reason to tune in -- if only here and there.

That's because Rodriguez is taking repetitions at first base.

The designated hitter told the Associated Press on Friday that he "thinks" he'll see time at the cold corner before the season is over, adding, "I think it's just a work in progress."

A-Rod acknowledged that the ability to play some position -- any position -- other than designated hitter will give manager Joe Girardi more options. Here's Rodriguez's team-friendly explanation:

"Being a piece for Joe, especially with (games against) National League teams, to be available for Joe," Rodriguez said. "I want to give Joe as much flexibility as possible."

For as bad as Rodriguez has been this season -- and he entered Friday night hitting .206/.256/.364 (65 OPS+) -- his overall numbers do trump Mark Teixiera's (60 OPS+). It's worth wondering, then, if the Yankees intend to revisit those internal conversations about releasing Teixeira, with an eye on trying Rodriguez as their most-days first baseman.

Of course, before the Yankees do any of the above, they'd be wise to see how Rodriguez takes to first base. He has just two games of experience at the cold corner, and hasn't played a defensive position yet this season, with all 54 of his starts coming at DH.
