After weeks of speculation, the Astros have done the inevitable: they've called up top prospect Alex Bregman to the majors. He's expected to join the club Monday prior to Houston's home game against the Yankees.

Entering Sunday, the 22-year-old Bregman, hit .333 through his first 78 at-bats in Triple-A.

Here's what you need to know about the promotion.

1. Bregman is among top prospects in baseball

Depending on your source, Bregman is considered the top prospect. Keith Law ranked him first overall in his midseason rankings, while Baseball Prospectus had him fourth and Baseball America placed him eighth. Each report boils down to the same premise: Bregman is a functional left-side-of-the-infield defender whose contact and on-base skills could make him a well-above-average hitter. And if Bregman maintains the power he's displayed as a professional (he's homered 24 times in 146 games), he could be much, much more.

2. Bregman figures to play all over

The Astros have two very good players occupying their double-play positions in Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve, meaning the shortstop prospect will have to get most of his reps elsewhere. The Astros were smart to prepare for this situation by playing Bregman at third base and left field over the past week-plus. He even pulled a Ben Zobrist in one game, starting at shortstop before sliding to left field. Expect A.J. Hinch to get Bregman in the lineup at all those positions and more. After all, the Astros could certainly use the help in the outfield and at DH, where Colby Rasmus, Carlos Gomez and Evan Gattis have disappointed.

3. The surging Astros now have more firepower

Sunday's 13-3 swamping of the Angels (boxscore) means the Astros have won four in a row and seven of their last 10. The Astros have positioned themselves a half-game back in the wild card race and 2 1/2 games back in the American League West. That's a tremendous turnaround considering they entered June five games under .500. Now, with one of the best prospects in baseball added to the roster, the Astros are 10 games over .500 and they look to be a serious threat to not only keep their run going, but to reclaim what appeared to be a lost division.

4. Fantasy owners will be flocking to Bregman, if they haven't already

Bregman is on his way to Houston, and fantasy writer Scott White says this is a callup that should go right for Fantasy owners. Here's his instant fantasy reaction to the news.
