On Wednesday, the Cardinals narrowly avoided getting swept at home by the rival Cubs (STL 4, CHC 3). Heading into the eighth, they were down 3-1, but they kept the line moving until Stephen Piscotty's clutch, one-out double put them in front for good ...

The win was a big one for St. Louis, first and foremost because the NL Central leaders had dropped five of six and seen their lead over the Pirates drop to 4 1/2 games. It was a also a welcome tone-setter, as the Cardinals will now begin a 10-game road trip.

Beyond that, though, the win meant the Cardinals have yet again avoided getting swept (no, two-game series don't count as sweeps). On that point ...

Indeed, the last time the Cardinals were swept was in a three-game road series against the Braves that ended on July 28, 2013. They haven't been swept at home since May 13, 2012, when, once again, the Braves pulled it off.

In a very much related matter, the Cardinals have been a darn good team over the sweep-less span in question.

Know who’s good at not getting swept? The Cardinals.
