The Cardinals recalled infielder Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday after placing left fielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list.
The team also designated first baseman Dan Johnson for assignment to clear a spot on the 25- and 40-man rosters for Brandon Moss, who was acquired in a trade with the Indians.
