Giants coach Tim Flannery raises $96K for beating victim Bryan Stow
The Giants of course haven't forgotten about the struggles of Bryan Stow, and here's the latest proof.
Giants third base coach Tim Flannery is known around baseball as being a crack musician and a genuinely swell guy, so what follows should come as no surprise. This from the AP:
[Flannery] presented the family of Bryan Stow with $96,000 over the weekend to help with his care as he continues to deal with traumatic injuries and brain damage from being severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Day 2011.
Flannery received a heartfelt thank-you voice mail from Stow, who still struggles to put thoughts and words together nearly three years after the attack. And more money is still coming from recent silent auctions and further CD sales
Flannery and his band, The Lunatic Fringe, recently concluded a series of four sold-out Northern California concerts benefiting Stow, while all dollars from purchases of Flannery's 11th album, "Outside Lands," released in November, go directly to Stow.
Suffice it to say, that's pretty solid on Flannery's part. As the excerpt notes, Stow, as a consequence of that awful assault, has been diminshed in any number of ways, including financially, and this is bound to be much needed relief.
The AP also notes that current Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt matched Flannery's original donation of $25,000, and franchise heavyweight Will Clark also chipped in $10,000.
Said Flannery of the efforts:
"It felt like this is a great opportunity to let the family know that people still are thinking about them. More than anything, it allows them to know that people still care, people still think about them. That has always been the story -- everybody else showing up and giving of themselves. I play the music. It inspires me to just keep doing it. It's not that difficult for me doing what I always do."
Good show all around, and never let it be said that the Giants don't take care of their own.
As always, here's to better days ahead for Bryan Stow and family.
