Earlier this week, a judge in New Jersey dismissed a pending domestic violence case against Mets closer Jeurys Familia. He was arrested at his home in late October and was charged with simple assault after police found his wife had scratches on her chest and a bruise on her cheek.

Familia can still be disciplined by MLB under the league's relatively new domestic violence policy even though the case was dismissed. And, according to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, Familia is likely facing a suspension of at least 30 games. From Ackert:

Industry sources believe that Familia will still face a suspension of at least 30 games under the joint domestic violence policy to start the 2017 season ... Familia is gearing up to plead his case to MLB and try to avoid a suspension under the joint domestic violence policy.

The domestic violence policy, which is a joint agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, allows commissioner Rob Manfred to suspend players even without a conviction or criminal charges. Three players have been suspended under the policy so far:

  • Aroldis Chapman: Suspended 30 games despite not being charged with a crime.
  • Jose Reyes: Suspended 51 games after charges were dismissed because his wife was uncooperative during the investigation.
  • Hector Olivera: Suspended 82 games after being found guilty of assault and sentenced to 10 days in jail.

A suspension of at least 30 games for Familia is consistent with the precedent that has been set. Chapman was not charged with a crime and was still suspended 30 games. Familia was charged with simple assault, but the case was dismissed. His suspension could be on par with Reyes'.

Players suspended under the domestic violence policy do not get paid and do not accrue service time. A suspension of at least 142 days would delay Familia's free agency one year, though based on the precedent that has been set, a ban that lengthy seems unlikely.

The Mets are reportedly in the market for bullpen help at the moment. Setup man Addison Reed figures to assume closing duties while Familia serves his potential suspension.
