The Padres will increase their payroll next season, according to MLB.com’s Barry Bloom.
Bloom sat down with general manager Josh Byrnes, who confirmed that although the exact payroll is yet to be decided, he expects to be able to spend more money next year. Much of that extra payroll will likely go towards arbitration. Third baseman Chase Headley, left-handed starter Clayton Richard, right-handed starter Edinson Volquez, left-hander Joe Thatcher and right fielder Will Venable are all players who will likely be due raises. Byrnes said those players are all part of the core that the team wants to build around.
The Padres are 74-83, good for fourth in the NL West. Entering this season, the Padres were the top-rated farm system in baseball according to ESPN.com’s Keith Law. Based on Byrnes' comments, the team will likely try to build from within to create the next winner in San Diego.
