The Phillies are nearing a deal with utility infielder Kevin Frandsen, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman reported Thursday. The deal, made official by the club Tuesday, will pay Frandsen $850,000 for the 2013 season.

Frandsen, 30, had the best season of his career with Philadelphia last season, posting a .338/.383/.451 (124 OPS+) in 210 plate appearances, a significant improvement over a .267/.322/.364 career line. He played all 52 of his defensive games at third base last season, filling in for an injured Placido Polanco, but he has significant experience at second base and has 22 starts at shortstop under his belt as well.
