The Tampa Bay Rays have designated 27-year-old shortstop Reid Brignac for assignment, according to CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.
The move clears a space on the Rays' 40-man roster.
A top-20 prospect as rated by Baseball America heading into the 2007 season and a top-80 prospect in each of the following three years, Brignac hit .227/.268/.317 with 10 home runs and eight stolen bases in 716 plate appearances for the Rays over five seasons.
Brignac spent most of 2012 at Triple-A Durham, where he hit .231/.323/.353 with eight home runs in 400 plate appearances.
