The Blue Jays have claimed catcher Bobby Wilson from the Angels, the club announced Monday.
Wilson, 29, hit .211/.277/.292 in 201 plate appearances (a career high) with the Angels this season. In 191 career games, he owns just a 67 OPS+. As with many career backup catchers, Wilson is considered primarily a defensive player. He threw out 29 percent of base-stealers with Anaheim last year compared to a league rate of 25 percent.
Wilson joins J.P. Arencibia and fellow former Angel Jeff Mathis as backstops with Toronto. With top prospect Travis d'Arnaud waiting in the wings, it's possible we'll see the Blue Jays attempt to move one of their current trio prior to Opening Day 2013.
The Blue Jays also designated pitcher Chad Beck for assignment. Beck appeared in 14 games with Toronto in 2012 and recorded a 6.32 ERA and 1.8 K/BB.
