The Mets are "very interested" in free-agent outfielder Grady Sizemore, Kevin Burkhardt of SNY reported Thursday.
Sizemore, 30, missed the entire 2012 season with a knee injury and underwent microfracture surgery in September. The recovery will keep him out through at least the start of the 2013 season, more likely until midseason.
The three-time All-Star owns a career .269/.357/.473 (120 OPS+) batting line, including 139 home runs and 134 stolen bases in eight seasons. The 2010 and 2011 seasons were a struggle, however, as the knee injuries took their toll. Sizemore managed just a .220/.280/.379 line (84 OPS+) in 104 games.
The Mets have shored up their outfield with the acquisition of Colin Cowgill. Still, with the rest of the outfield consisting of just Lucas Duda, Kirk Nieuwienhuis and Mike Baxter, there should be plate appearances available for Sizemore if he can get on the field.
