The Rays are talking to reliever Kyle Farnsworth about a return, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Farnsworth’s agent said Farnsworth was “very open” to returning to the Rays. Farnsworth failed to capitalize on a breakout 2011 season and spent much of 2012 on the disabled list. While Farnsworth was injured, Fernando Rodney cemented himself as the team’s closer. Farnsworth was still useful when he returned, tossing 27 innings with a 4.00 ERA and a 3.39 FIP. He struggled with his command, walking 11.7 percent of batters, one of the highest rates of his career.
With Rodney in the fold for 2013, Farnsworth would have to return to the team in a setup role. The team has been in contact with Farnsworth, and the fact that the two sides are still talking should be some cause for encouragement. Farnsworth’s injury has limited how much he’ll make this offseason, meaning the Rays might be able to get him back with another cheap deal. Since the club doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on relievers, bringing back Farnsworth could make sense.
