John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that he's "hearing" that veteran third baseman Scott Rolen wants to play again in 2013.

Fayman also writes that a return to the Reds might be unlikely, what with the team's maxed-out budget and the fact that Todd Frazier and Jack Hannahan are penciled in as the third-base platoon.

Rolen, who'll turn 38 just after opening day, is coming off a season in which he batted .245/.318/.398 across 330 plate appearances.

He has battled shoulder and back problems throughout recent history, and his last standout season at the plate was 2010. With that said, the eight-time Gold Glove winner still grades out as a defensive asset. In that sense, Rolen could still be useful as a part-time fielding specialist and occasional starter against lefties.

The Dodgers have previously been mentioned as having interest.
