David Hernandez: Let go by Cleveland
The Indians released Hernandez on Sunday.
Hernandez inked a minor-league deal with the Indians in early July and was added to the team's 60-man roster pool, but he apparently didn't make enough of an impression at Cleveland's alternate training site over the past two-plus months to earn a promotion to the big club. He's now free to pursue opportunities with other organizations ahead of the 2021 campaign.

Indians' David Hernandez: Joins Cleveland's roster pool
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with Cleveland on Friday and will join the team's 60-man roster pool.
The 35-year-old has been an effective reliever at times during his 10-year big-league career, saving 24 career games while posting a career ERA of 4.12. He looked quite poor in 42.2 innings with the Reds last season, however, struggling to an 8.02 ERA, though he did at least record a 26.8 percent strikeout rate, his highest mark since 2012.

David Hernandez: Let go by Nationals
Hernandez was released by the Nationals on Saturday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Hernandez was a non-roster invitee for the Nationals this spring, but he struggled with a 19.29 ERA and 2.57 WHIP over just 2.1 innings. The right-hander was effective in 2017 and 2018 prior to an unimpressive showing with the Reds last season, in which he posted an 8.02 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. Given his recent lack of production, it wouldn't be surprising to see him spend some time in the minors prior to earning a spot in a major-league bullpen.

Nationals' David Hernandez: Invited to Nationals' camp
Hernandez will attend spring training with the Nationals as a non-roster invitee.
Hernandez spent a majority of the 2019 season with the Reds, recording a 8.02 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB across 42.2 innings. The veteran reliever owned an impressive 0.98 WHIP in 2018 with Cincinnati and will have the opportunity to make a positive first impressive on the Nationals' big-league coaching staff during spring training.

Hernandez inked a minor-league deal with the Yankees in mid-August shortly after being let go by the Reds, and he now makes his way back to free agency. The 34-year-old allowed six runs over seven innings at Triple-A after struggling with a 8.02 ERA for the Reds.

Yankees' David Hernandez: Reaches minors pact with Yankees
Hernandez agreed Wednesday on a minor-league contract with the Yankees, Andersen Pickard of MLBDailyDish.com reports.
The 34-year-old will move on to the seventh different organization of his career after being cut loose by the Reds a few days earlier. Prior to being released, Hernandez submitted a woeful 8.02 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 42.2 innings, but a 4.34 FIP probably paints a better picture of his true talent level. The Yankees assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and see if he can eventually be a solution for their bullpen in late August or September.

Reds' David Hernandez: Activated from IL
Hernandez (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
As expected, Hernandez will rejoin the Reds ahead of Wednesday's series finale after spending a little less than two weeks on the shelf with a shoulder injury. He'll take the roster spot of Yasiel Puig, who was traded to the Indians in part of a three-team deal. Prior to suffering the injury, Hernandez compiled a 6.92 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 50:16 K:BB in 39 innings.

Hernandez was sent to the shelf July 18 due to right shoulder fatigue, but he progressed to throwing live batting practice Sunday and is expected to rejoin the team Wednesday if all goes according to plan. The Reds will presumably wait and see how Hernandez's shoulder responds to the workout before determining whether he'll need a minor-league rehab assignment before returning from the 10-day injured list. Hernandez has missed just over the minimum amount of time with the shoulder injury, but the Reds may want to see him sort out some mechanical issues during an appearance in the minors before reinserting him into their bullpen.

Hernandez was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder fatigue.
The injury could help explain Hernandez's recent struggles, as the right-hander has allowed 14 earned runs on 15 hits and five walks over his last 4.1 innings (eight appearances). Hernandez will get at least the next 10 days to rest and recover, while Lucas Sims was summoned from the minors to take his place in the bullpen.

Reds' David Hernandez: Blows save Friday
Hernandez allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies.
It's the third blown save of the season for the reliever, who now sports a 6.28 ERA and 1.45 WHIP on the year. Hernandez has allowed 11 runs over his last six outings, with all of the damage Friday coming on solo shots from David Dahl and Daniel Murphy.

Reds' David Hernandez: Melts down in loss
Hernandez (2-4) took the loss in relief Monday against the Brewers after giving up three runs on three hits and two walks during a 30-pitch seventh inning.
As C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic notes, Hernandez acknowledged after the contest that the death of former Diamondbacks and Angels teammate Tyler Skaggs was weighing on his mind during the outing, so his struggles are certainly understandable in that context. Nonetheless, the appearance was Hernandez's third straight in which he allowed at least one run, a development that could prompt manager David Bell to rethink his usage of the right-hander. With 11 holds on the season, Hernandez trails only Amir Garrett (14) for the team lead.

Reds' David Hernandez: Earns second win
Hernandez (2-3) got the win Friday night against the Brewers, relieving Sonny Gray in the fifth inning and not allowing a run over 1.2 innings.
The 34-year-old has been bypassed by Michael Lorenzen as the Reds' late-inning alternative to Raisel Iglesias, but this makes six scoreless outings in a row for Hernandez after a bad stretch in late May and early June. On the year, the right-hander now sports a 4.28 ERA and 43:11 K:BB through 33.2 innings.

Reds' David Hernandez: Sterling outing
Hernandez threw two scoreless innings Saturday against the Giants, striking out five of the six batters he faced to notch his sixth hold of the season. With the outing, Hernandez lowered his ERA to 2.89 and his WHIP to 1.34, and he now has a 22:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings.
Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani didn't have his best stuff, but the bullpen came up huge with five scoreless innings. Hernandez probably won't be available for Sunday's game, though he might be used in a pinch if the game goes really deep, as the Reds are off Monday.

Reds' David Hernandez: Comes up huge
Hernandez relieved Luis Castillo in the seventh inning a bases-loaded, no-out situation and struck out the side in Thursday's win over the Braves, preserving a 3-0 lead at the time.
Hernandez rose to the challenge in the biggest sequence in the game, striking out Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte and Ozzie Albies to get the Reds out of a jam. He picked up his fourth hold of the season and improved his K:BB to 10:5 over 10.2 innings.
