Doug Fister: Calls it quits
Fister announced his decision to retire Wednesday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Fister apparently received multiple major-league contract offers this offseason, but the 35-year-old decided to call it quits in order to spend more time with the family. Across parts of 10 big-league seasons, Fister posted a career 3.72 ERA.

Doug Fister: 2019 option declined
The Rangers declined Fister's $4.5 million option for 2019 on Friday.
Fister made just 12 starts for the Rangers in 2018 due to injuries, posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 5.5 K/9 over those outings. While the veteran right-hander is expected to be healthy by spring training, he has now dealt with injuries in three of the last four seasons, posting a combined 4.56 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over that stretch.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Shut down for season
Fister (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, Levi Weaver of The Athletic Dallas reports.
Fister, who has been sidelined since June 10 with a strained right knee, was recently shut down after it was determined that he would be unlikely to pitch again this season. He'll continue rehabbing at home as he looks to get back to full health ahead of spring training next year. The 34-year-old posted a 4.50 ERA across 12 starts (66 innings) with the Rangers before injuring himself.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Shifts to 60-day DL
The Rangers transferred Fister (knee) to the 60-day disabled list Sunday.
The extent of the strained right knee Fister suffered during his June 8 outing still isn't fully known, but the Rangers evidently determined that the injury was serious enough to sideline him for at least two months. In addition to depleting Texas' already porous rotation, Fister's injury likely closes the door on the Rangers selling him to a contending club at the July 31 trade deadline. With Fister joining Martin Perez (elbow) on the 60-day DL, newly promoted starters Yohander Mendez and Yovani Gallardo should both have the opportunity to make multiple turns through the rotation for the big club.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Set to miss more than minimum time
Rangers manager Jeff Banister said that Fister (knee), who was placed on the disabled list Sunday, would be sidelined for longer than the minimum 10 days, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Fister has already spent time on the DL this season due to a hip issue, so the Rangers will let the right-hander take some time off to recover while he battles another lower-body injury. Thanks to a pair of off-days during the upcoming week, the Rangers won't require a replacement for Fister in the rotation until June 19 against the Royals, so look for the team to get by with a four-man rotation for the time being.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Team awaits MRI results
The Rangers are still waiting on the results of an MRI on Fister's right knee, Adam Grosbard of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Manager Jeff Banister spoke with Fister on Saturday and said the right-hander was "not feeling great." The Rangers have some time before making a decision, as Fister is not scheduled to pitch again until Friday against Colorado.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Goes to DL with knee strain
Fister was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right knee.
Fister was diagnosed with the injury after he was sent in for an MRI following his five-inning start in the series opener Friday against the Astros. Due to upcoming team off days Monday and Thursday, the Rangers would be able to get by without a fifth starter until June 19, at which point Fister would be eligible to return from the DL. The Rangers will presumably wait and see if Fister is ready to resume a throwing program within the next few days before determining whether or not they'll need to add another to the mix temporarily.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Falls to 1-7 with loss Friday
Fister (1-7) allowed five runs on six hits in a loss to the Astros on Friday, striking out two and walking two in five innings.
Fister (who left the game in the sixth with an apparent knee injury) gave up a four-spot in the second inning, which was too much to surrender in a matchup against Houston starter Justin Verlander. Fister has thrown five quality starts -- out of 12 total starts -- on the year, and currently holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while opponents are hitting .278 off the veteran. He'll look for his second win of the season in his next start against the Rockies at home.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Leaves game with injury
Fister's outing against the Astros on Friday was cut short by an apparent injury.
Fister was lifted from the game after throwing one pitch in the sixth inning. It was later determined that he was dealing with right knee soreness, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports, and he's expected to be evaluated Saturday.

Fister (1-6) allowed three earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out one across six innings to take the loss Sunday against the Angels.
Fister engaged in a pitchers' duel with Tyler Skaggs but didn't get run support. As a result, he took his second consecutive loss, despite recording quality starts on both occasions. He continued his season-long trend of inducing few strikeouts and instead relying on generating soft contact to get outs. That approach limits his fantasy value even though he has posted a respectable 4.13 ERA through 11 starts this season.

Rangers' Doug Fister: Takes fifth loss despite quality start
Fister (1-5) allowed two runs on a walk and six hits with two strikeouts through six innings but still took the loss Monday against the Mariners.
Fister managed a strong start despite inducing just one swinging strike thanks to 13 groundballs. It's a fine strategy when Fister is on his game, but when he's even slightly off, opponents have hammered him. Fister has failed to complete the fifth inning three times and has allowed five, six and eight runs in starts on separate occasions this season. In the current homer-heavy environment, the margin for error for pitchers like Fister is tiny, so unfortunately, it's hard to count on consistency from him. He'll make his next start against another division rival Saturday against the Angels.
