The utility man was sidelined with a broken hand since spring training, but he was able to return to action with the Isotopes over the weekend after rehabbing at extended spring training to start the season. O'Malley has a unique profile as a switch hitter who can play both on the infield and the outfield, but his .231 career batting average in the majors suggests he's destined for an organizational depth role.

No word has come forth as to when the injury cropped up, but the injury has limited him to just 15 at-bats this spring. O'Malley agreed to a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Saturday which includes an invitation to spring training, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
O'Malley missed the majority of the 2017 season while recovering from an appendectomy and arthroscopic shoulder surgery. He ended up appearing in 33 games across three levels of the minors, but hit just .235/.333/.361 over that span before being cast off the Mariners' 40-man roster in September. He'll look to catch on as a utility man, though it's more likely he winds up as organizational depth.

"Shawn has gone through a lot this season, between the shoulder issue and there's been a ton of different things that have come upon him this year," manager Scott Servais said. O'Malley was removed Monday in the first inning of Triple-A Tacoma's game after sustaining a concussion, Tacoma radio play-by-play announcer Mike Curto reports.
O'Malley apparently suffered the head injury after tripping over the pitcher's mound while pursuing a popup. The utility man has had a rocky season on the health front, as he was sidelined for the beginning of the campaign with appendicitis and also missed significant time while recovering from shoulder surgery. The concussion could keep him out of the mix for a promotion to the Mariners when rosters expand in September.

O'Malley had produced only one hit in 19 at-bats in his previous six games with Arkansas, but his standout performances the last two days suggest that he might have knocked off the rust after being sidelined through early July while recovering from an appendectomy, followed by arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The utility man's rehab window will draw to a close soon, so he could be activated from the 60-day disabled list at some point later in August. The utility man couldn't have asked for a better 2017 debut, and is likely in for at least several more games at the Rookie level before taking his rehab up the organizational ranks. O'Malley slashed .229/.299/.319 with two home runs and 17 RBI over 89 games with the Mariners last season in what was his first taste of extended big-league action. If he remains free of setbacks, O'Malley should be cleared for a return to the big-league club at some point next month, although how much playing time he'll see will largely depend on the club's injury situation at the time.

O'Malley had been locked in a spirited spring battle with Taylor Motter and Mike Freeman for the utility role, but given the timing of his surgery and subsequent recovery, he's almost certain to start the season at Triple-A Tacoma. The most likely recovery timetable is 2-3 weeks, which pushes his return past Opening Day. Despite the fact he may have lost out on a roster spot for the time being, the impression he left with his play this spring was a lasting one, which could serve his chances of returning to the big league club later in the season. "He's played very well (this spring),'' manager Scott Servais said of O'Malley who has hit .278 in 36 at-bats. "Done a nice job at shortstop and wherever we've put him. We all know what Shawn brings. It's the high energy, great effort every time he's out there, whether it's a spring training 'B' game or we put him in late in a game in a big-league game."
